When I first arrived in Spain, I kept hearing about a ‘National Sports University’ and assumed it was a standalone institution. It took me a while to figure out that everyone was actually referring to the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, famously known as INEF! This place holds a legendary status in the Spanish sports world; it’s a real powerhouse, with many national team coaches and famous athletes being its alumni.
What Makes INEF a Top Choice?
It has a long and storied history, deeply intertwined with the development of sports in Spain. It has produced countless physical educators, coaches, sports managers, and rehabilitation therapists. The Spanish Olympic Committee also has strong ties with the faculty. In essence, INEF is more than just a place for training athletes; it’s where the masterminds who shape the future of Spanish sports are cultivated. For students looking to pursue advanced studies in the sports field, the resources and network here are unparalleled.

The campus buzzes with an incredible athletic atmosphere, and the facilities are exceptionally comprehensive. A standard running track, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, multiple indoor gymnasiums, a climbing wall, a fitness center, human movement analysis labs… you name it, they have it. Studying here, you feel energized every day. Feel like slacking off? Not a chance. When everyone around you is working up a sweat, you won’t have the heart to stop.
What Can You Study at INEF?
The programs offered here are highly specialized and in-depth, going beyond just physical training to explore the underlying science. Much like other institutions such as UCAM, another top sports university in Spain, INEF provides numerous options at both the undergraduate and master’s levels. I’ve put together a simple table for your reference:
| Level | Specialization |
| Bachelor’s | Physical Activity and Sport Sciences |
| Master’s | Athletic Performance and Health |
| Master’s | Sports Law |
| Master’s | Sports Marketing |
Getting into the bachelor’s program is quite challenging. In addition to high university entrance exam scores, similar to the requirements for sports programs at UCAM, applicants must also pass a rigorous physical fitness test, as required by many sports-focused universities in Spain, which demands excellent physical condition. However, this ensures a high caliber of students. Are there any current INEF students or anyone else interested in sports programs here? Let’s share our application experiences and study insights!
