Having just arrived in Madrid, I’ve seen a lot of fellow students on forums asking about universities. The Big Three Public Universities: There’s One for Everyone
Madrid has many great universities, but when it comes to the most famous and comprehensive public ones, you can’t miss these three: Complutense, Polytechnic, and Carlos III. Each has its own focus and a completely different style.
Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) - A Haven for Humanities Students
The sense of history at UCM is incredible; it’s one of Spain’s oldest universities, with classical architecture everywhere on campus. If you’re studying humanities like languages, history, journalism, or art, UCM is definitely the top choice. Its humanities faculties are renowned in Spain and even globally. The downside is that some facilities at Madrid’s universities in Spain can be a bit outdated, and with a huge number of students for many Spanish majors at Madrid universities, registering for classes can sometimes feel like a race!
Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) - The Cradle of Engineers
As the name suggests, this is a hub for science and engineering whizzes. UPM is a leader in Spain in fields like architecture, aerospace, computer science, and various engineering disciplines. It’s famous for its heavy workload and difficult exams; it’s said that anyone who successfully graduates from UPM is a true brainiac. If you plan to specialize in a tech field, even if you are also considering the Universidad Europea de Madrid in Spain, a degree from UPM is highly valuable—you’ll see its worth when you start job hunting.
Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) - Young and International
UC3M is relatively young but has grown rapidly and is highly international. Its programs in business, economics, and law are ranked very high, and its teaching model is more aligned with the US/UK systems. The university places a strong emphasis on practical experience and international exchange, offering many bilingual programs. You’ll meet classmates from all over the world on campus. Personally, I find the atmosphere at UC3M to be more modern and vibrant, though its main campus is in Getafe, a bit of a distance from the city center.
