When you think of Spanish fashion, your first thoughts might be fast-fashion giants like ZARA and MANGO. While they are a big part of the scene, Spain is also the homeland of the luxury brand Loewe and the master designer Balenciaga. The country has a rich heritage in design, which is why many also look into interior design programs at Spanish universities. With its deep fashion industry roots and incredible artistic atmosphere, studying fashion design here is an excellent choice, and it’s a great destination for other creative fields like urban design programs in Spain as well.
Popular University Choices
Spain’s top-tier fashion design schools are mainly concentrated in the two fashion capitals: Madrid and Barcelona. There are excellent options in both public and private sectors, so the choice primarily depends on your personal goals and budget.
Madrid Region
- IED : Istituto Europeo di Design, a very famous private design powerhouse. Its teaching model is highly international and closely linked to the market, emphasizing practical skills and project experience. It boasts a strong alumni network, but the tuition fees are relatively high.
- UPM - CSDMM : Centro Superior de Diseño de Moda de Madrid, part of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. This is the flagship program of a public university, with a stronger academic focus and a solid theoretical foundation. If you want to delve deep into fashion theory and history and are looking for great value for money, UPM is a top choice. The focus here is on fashion, but it’s good to know that Spain is also a great place to study other modern design fields, such as UI/UX design programs in Spain.
Barcelona Region
- ESDi : The School of Design, affiliated with Ramon Llull University, is a very comprehensive design institution. Its fashion design program has an excellent reputation in the industry. The curriculum balances creative inspiration with commercial application, and its graduates have a high employment rate.
- LCI Barcelona: Part of the LCI Education network, this school is highly international and offers a wider range of courses taught in English. It’s a friendly option for students whose Spanish skills are not yet strong.

One last piece of advice: for applying to art schools in Spain, your portfolio is paramount! Also, most top-tier undergraduate and master’s programs are still taught in Spanish, so language is a critical hurdle. Don’t think you can just learn it after you arrive; that’s basically nightmare mode, and you’ll really struggle to keep up with the coursework. That’s all I can think of for now.
