Lately, there have been a lot of posts on the forum discussing Spanish universities, so I thought I’d join in and talk about a university that holds a special place in my heart—the University of Santiago de Compostela, or USC. It’s one of Spain’s oldest universities, founded in 1495, almost around the time Columbus discovered the New World. The historical depth is simply incredible!
USC is located in Santiago de Compostela, the capital of the Galicia region, and the entire city feels like a university town. Unlike the hustle and bustle of Madrid or Barcelona, this University of Santiago de Compostela offers a sense of tranquility and ancient charm. The city itself is the famous final destination of the Camino de Santiago, so you see pilgrims from all over the world every day. The university’s buildings blend seamlessly with the old town; walking on cobblestone streets past centuries-old academic buildings feels like stepping back in time every day. The downside? Well… it rains a lot. It’s truly earned its nickname as Spain’s ‘City of Rain’.

Academics and Majors
Don’t let its age fool you; its academic prowess is formidable. USC is strong in many fields, particularly in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Chemistry, and Linguistics. Its Faculty of Philology is top-tier for Spanish studies. If you want to learn authentic Spanish or delve deep into literary research at the University of Santiago, this is an ideal place. Many Nobel laureates, as well as prominent Spanish politicians and celebrities, have studied or taught at the University of Santiago in Spain, contributing to a very rich academic atmosphere.
Cost of Living and Experience
When it comes to daily life, the cost of living in the Galicia region is impressively affordable! Compared to major cities, rent and daily expenses are significantly lower, making it very student-friendly. The food is also fantastic, with fresh and inexpensive seafood. Student life is vibrant; as a university city, there’s no shortage of cultural events, parties, and tapas bars. Here’s a table with a rough estimate of monthly expenses for your reference:
| Item | Monthly Cost (€) |
| Student Dorm/Shared Flat | 200 - 350 |
| Food/Groceries | 150 - 250 |
| Local Transport | 20 - 40 |
| Entertainment & Other | 50 - 100 |
If you love historically rich cities, seek a tranquil academic environment, and are on a budget, then the University of Santiago de Compostela is an absolutely excellent value-for-money choice. Of course, this is all provided you can handle the humid climate with its 200 rainy days a year. Any USC alumni or anyone else interested in Galicia here? Let’s chat!
