I’ve seen a lot of discussions in online forums recently about studying in Spain, with most of the talk centered on large, comprehensive institutions like the Complutense University of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. But if your focus is purely on humanities or social sciences when considering arts at a Spanish university, Spain actually has quite a few ‘hidden gem’ universities that are highly specialized. Their academic tradition in these fields can often be even deeper than that of the big-city schools!
A Few Recommended Hidden Gems for Arts & Humanities
Today, I’ll introduce a few of my personal favorite universities that are strong in the arts, hoping to offer some new perspectives for those of you currently in the process of choosing a school.

1. University of Salamanca
When talking about humanities in Spain, the University of Salamanca is a name you simply can’t overlook. It’s one of the birthplaces of the Spanish language and boasts one of the world’s top programs in Spanish Philology. If you’re looking to dive deep into Spanish language, literature, or history while studying humanities in Spain, this place is a true pilgrimage. The entire city is a living museum, creating an incredibly rich academic atmosphere.
2. University of Granada & University of Seville
I’m mentioning these two together as they are both located in the charming region of Andalusia. The University of Granada is renowned for its Translation and Interpreting programs. Influenced by its history, its Arabic Studies and Philology departments are also top-notch. On the other hand, the University of Seville has significant strengths in Art History, Flamenco Studies, and Latin American Studies. Both cities offer a lower cost of living and a truly unique cultural experience.
| University | Key Strengths | City Highlights |
| University of Salamanca | Spanish Philology, Law, History | Classic academic town, Cultural heritage |
| University of Granada | Translation & Interpreting, Arabic Studies | Home of the Alhambra, Exotic charm |
| University of Seville | Art History, Flamenco Studies | Passionate and vibrant, Capital of Andalusia |
When choosing a university, don’t just fixate on rankings or the size of the city. For arts and humanities students, a city’s cultural heritage and a school’s academic tradition can be much more important. I hope this has been helpful, and I encourage anyone familiar with these schools to share their own insights and join the discussion! Choosing a school can be a real headache. Wishing you all the best in getting into your dream university
