Lately, friends and new students in Spain often ask me which universities are the best for studying medicine. It’s a crucial question, especially since medicine is a ‘premier field of study’ in Spain, with dauntingly high admission scores and incredibly fierce competition. Today, based on what I know, I’ll share my thoughts on some of the top medical schools in Spain, hoping to offer some guidance for those of you currently making a choice.
Public University Giants
When it comes to medicine, two giants in the public university system are impossible to ignore: the University of Barcelona and the Complutense University of Madrid. Both are among Spain’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Their medical schools not only consistently top national rankings but also hold a high reputation internationally. The advantages include guaranteed quality of education, extensive resources from affiliated hospitals, and numerous internship opportunities. The downside? The almost unattainable admission scores, with competition getting more intense every year.
Besides these two, the medical programs at the Autonomous University of Madrid and the University of Granada are also excellent, both being major centers for medical education in Spain. Choosing a public university offers the best value for money, but you’ll need to be a top student to get in!

Elite Choices in Private Universities
If your university entrance exam scores aren’t quite at the top tier but your family’s financial situation allows, some top private universities are an excellent alternative. The first one that comes to mind is the University of Navarra. Its medical school is acclaimed as one of the best not just in Spain, but in Europe, known for its elite small-class teaching, strong research capabilities, and high level of internationalization. Of course, the tuition fees are also quite ‘elite.’ However, it’s said that graduates from UNAV are highly sought-after in the job market.
To give you a clearer picture, I’ve put together a simple table for reference on Spanish medical universities:
| University Name | 2023 QS World Ranking (Medicine) | 2023 Admission Score (Nota de Corte) | Features |
| University of Barcelona | 51-100 | 12.9+ | Strong overall reputation, rich clinical resources |
| Complutense University of Madrid | 101-150 | 13.0+ | Spain’s largest medical school, high prestige |
| University of Navarra | 101-150 | Private, own entrance exam | Elite education, highly international |
| Autonomous University of Madrid | 101-150 | 13.1+ | Outstanding research strength |
One last reminder: if you want to study medicine in Spain, language is the first hurdle. You’ll need at least a DELE B2 level. Also, don’t think that just having a high enough score is all it takes; many universities, especially private ones, have their own interviews or entrance exams that you need to prepare for in advance. In summary, your choice of university should be based on a combination of your academic performance, financial situation, and future career goals. All roads lead to Rome, and studying medicine in Spain is a cool achievement in itself! Are there any other universities you’re interested in? Or would any current students or alumni like to share their experiences? Feel free to leave a comment and join the discussion below!
