I’ve been traveling back and forth between Barcelona and Madrid quite a bit for work recently, so I’ve gotten to know the AVE high-speed train fairly well, including routes like the one for Barcelona vs. Atlético Madrid. Seeing that many people here on the forum have been asking about this line, I decided to compile my experiences to hopefully help everyone out.
Fares and Booking Channels
First, let’s talk about the biggest concern for most people: the price. AVE train fares vary significantly, depending mainly on how far in advance you book and which class you choose. I’ve put together a general price range for your reference:
| Class Type | Advance Booking Price | Last-Minute Price | Key Differences |
| Básico | €25-€45 | €70-€90 | No changes or refunds |
| Elige | €45-€80 | €100-€130 | Allows one change |
| Prémium | €90-€150 | €150-€200 | Includes meal, changes allowed |
Pro tip: By booking on the Renfe official website 2-3 weeks in advance, you can often snag special fares for €25-€30, which is more than half the price of a last-minute ticket.
The main booking channels are the Renfe official website and its app. Occasionally, third-party platforms like Trainline might have promotions. However, I prefer using the official website; although the interface isn’t the most user-friendly, at least it doesn’t charge a booking fee. After creating an account, you can accumulate Renfe loyalty points, and with enough travel, you can even redeem them for free tickets.
Travel Time and Schedule
The AVE runs from Barcelona Sants station to Madrid Puerta de Atocha station. The fastest direct service takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, while some services that stop in Zaragoza may take an extra 15-20 minutes. There are one or two trains per hour every day from 6 AM to 9 PM, making the schedule very flexible.
I usually opt for a train around 8 AM, which gets me to Madrid at 10:30 AM, just in time for meetings before lunch. For the return trip, I like the 5 PM train, getting home right around dinnertime. Tickets for Friday and Sunday evenings are in high demand, so be sure to book them well in advance.

On-board Experience
The seats on the AVE are much more comfortable than on regular trains, with plenty of legroom even in the Básico class. Each seat has a power outlet and a small tray table, perfect for working on a laptop. There is Wi-Fi on board, but the speed is just average—fine for browsing the web, but don’t count on it for streaming video.
I had heard that the sandwiches in the dining car were terrible, but I later found them to be quite decent, just a bit pricey. I now bring my own bread and fruit on board, which is both cheaper and healthier. The Prémium class includes a complimentary meal, but honestly, it’s not great value for money. Unless your company is paying for it, it’s not worth spending the extra tens of euros for a standard meal.
Practical Tips
About choosing your seat: I recommend getting a window seat to enjoy the views of the Castilian Plateau along the way. If you’re prone to motion sickness, choosing a seat facing the direction of travel will be more comfortable.
Arrive at the station early: Both Sants and Atocha stations are quite large, so it’s a good idea to arrive at least 20 minutes beforehand. You don’t need to go through airport-style security, but you’ll still need time to find your platform and board. Your ticket will show your carriage (coche) and seat (plaza) number, so double-check before boarding to make sure you’re in the right carriage.
There aren’t many restrictions on luggage. Each passenger can bring up to 3 items, as long as they fit on the luggage racks. Large suitcases can be stored in the dedicated areas at either end of the carriage; just remember to lock them or keep an eye on them.
The AVE high-speed train from Barcelona to Madrid is a very well-established mode of transport. It’s punctual, fast, and relatively comfortable. If you plan your trip in advance, the price isn’t too expensive either. Compared to flying, which requires arriving at the airport 2 hours early and traveling to an airport on the outskirts of the city, the train’s direct service to the city center is much more convenient.
