A Realistic Look at Monthly Living Costs in Barcelona
I moved to Barcelona six months ago and wanted to share a realistic breakdown of the living costs here. Many people are curious about how much it costs to live for a month in this Mediterranean city, so today I’ll detail my actual expenses, including the cost of living in Barcelona.
Accommodation Costs
Rent is definitely the biggest expense. I live in a studio apartment in the Eixample district, and my monthly rent is €650, including utilities. If you want to live in more popular central areas like Gràcia, a studio typically costs between €700 and €900. Sharing an apartment can be cheaper, with a room costing around €400-€550. Suburban areas like Sant Martí or Sants are more affordable, but the commute will be longer.

Daily Food and Drink Expenses
Food expenses can vary greatly from person to person. I mostly cook at home and spend about €40-€50 per week on groceries from Mercadona or Carrefour. Occasionally, I’ll eat out; a ‘Menu del día’ (lunch menu) usually costs €12-€15, while a nice dinner at a restaurant on the weekend might be €25-€35. The coffee culture is huge here, with a cup costing €1.5-€2.5. Drinking coffee daily can add up, especially if you’re enjoying the Barcelona lifestyle.
Here is a breakdown of my monthly food expenses:
| Item | Monthly Cost | Notes |
| Groceries | €180-€200 | Cooking at home |
| Dining Out | €80-€120 | 2-3 times a week |
| Coffee & Drinks | €30-€40 | Occasional spending |
| Snacks & Fruits | €20-€30 | For snacks and vitamins |
Transportation and Other Expenses
Barcelona’s public transport is very convenient. I have a TMB monthly pass for €54.60, which allows unlimited travel on the metro and buses. If you are under 25, there are cheaper youth tickets available. An occasional Uber or Cabify ride for a short distance costs about €8-€12.
Other daily expenses include: a mobile phone plan for €15-€25, a gym membership for €30-€45, and streaming subscriptions like Netflix for around €10. On weekends, entertainment costs for visiting the beach or museums can be around €50-€80.
In Summary
All in all, my basic monthly living expenses are around €1,200-€1,400. If you live a more frugal lifestyle, you could manage on about €1,000. If you often socialize and travel, it could be closer to €1,600-€1,800. Overall, the cost of living in Barcelona is on the higher side for Spain, but it’s still quite reasonable compared to other major European cities.
I hope this information is helpful for anyone planning to move to Barcelona. Everyone’s spending habits are different, so actual costs will vary, but this general range should give you a realistic idea.
