I’ve recently seen many people on forums asking about choosing a university in Spain, so today I’d like to talk about my alma mater—the Autonomous University of Barcelona, commonly known as UAB. For many, the first impression of UAB is that it’s a university on a hill. And that’s correct. Its main campus isn’t in downtown Barcelona but in a small town called Cerdanyola del Vallès. This is both one of its defining features and a point of hesitation for many prospective students.

The UAB campus is truly huge, almost like a self-contained university town. It has academic buildings, libraries, canteens, a gym, residential halls, and even a small lake. Basically, everything you need for your studies and daily life can be found right on campus. The advantages are a strong academic atmosphere, a quiet environment, great green spaces, and fresh air. The disadvantages are also clear: getting into the city requires a commuter train ride of about 30-40 minutes. For those who love the hustle and bustle of urban life, UAB might feel a bit ‘rural’ compared to other universities in Barcelona. Spending weekends in the dorm becomes the norm.
Academically, however, UAB is undoubtedly one of Spain’s top public universities, consistently ranking among the top five in the country. Its Faculty of Translation and Interpreting is renowned throughout Europe and even the world, making it a dream school for many language students. In addition, programs like Veterinary Medicine, Sociology, Communication, and Economics are also very strong. The university is highly international, so you’ll meet classmates from all over the world, creating a fantastic atmosphere for cultural exchange.
A Quick Look at the Pros and Cons of Studying at UAB
To give you a more direct overview, I’ve made a simple summary table:
| Pros | Cons |
| Beautiful campus with complete facilities | Relatively remote location, time-consuming commute |
| High academic reputation, outstanding flagship programs | Large campus, long distances between buildings |
| Strong, quiet, and undisturbed study atmosphere | Social and recreational activities are mostly campus-based |
| On-campus housing available for convenience | Might be boring for students who prefer city life |
If you’re the type of person who can settle down to do serious academic work and loves a natural environment with a classic campus atmosphere, then UAB is a perfect choice. This offers a different experience compared to more centrally located institutions like the University of Barcelona. But if you’re seeking a study abroad experience where you can feel the pulse of Barcelona every day, you might need to seriously consider the commute. Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose what’s right for you! Fellow UAB alumni are welcome to add their own experiences and share some advice for future students!
