Hello everyone! There have been a lot of posts about buying property on the forum recently, so today I want to talk about it from a different angle: the real impact that having your own place in Spain has on traveling. When we decided to buy a home here, a big reason, besides wanting to settle down, was the dream of using it as a home base to explore Europe anytime. We’ve been living here for almost a year now, and I want to share our genuine experience.
It’s Not About the Property, It’s About the ‘Status’
First, let’s be clear: what truly makes travel convenient isn’t the property deed itself, but the residency card that comes with it. With legal residency status, we have freedom of movement within the Schengen Area. We no longer have to prepare a mountain of documents, book visa appointments, and anxiously wait for the results every time we plan a trip to Germany, France, or Italy. This feeling of freedom to “just pick up and go” is truly priceless.
Having a home also completely changes your travel mindset. Before, when we traveled to Europe, we’d pack huge bags, trying to bring everything with us. Now, we can leave most of our belongings at home and just take a small backpack for a weekend trip to Lisbon or Rome. Travel is no longer a major event that requires meticulous planning but has become a part of our lifestyle. Last month, on a whim, we bought tickets on a Friday night and were in Paris for the weekend by Saturday morning. It felt amazing!

Of Course, There’s a Gap Between the Dream and Reality
While travel has become incredibly free, the costs of owning property are very real. When the house is empty, the various expenses don’t stop. It’s crucial to calculate these costs before buying. Here’s a simple breakdown of our family’s annual fixed expenses for your reference:
| Expense Item | Approx. Annual Cost (€) | Notes |
| Property Tax (IBI) | 600 - 1200 | Levied annually by the city council |
| Community Fees (Comunidad) | 720 - 1500 | Includes maintenance of common areas, elevator, etc. |
| Waste Collection Fee | Approx. 100 | Varies by region |
| Home Insurance | 200 - 400 | Very important and essential |
Basic utility standing charges | Approx. 300 | There’s a basic monthly fee even if not used |
Note: These are just estimates and do not include potential maintenance costs, which is another factor to consider when buying property in Spain while on vacation. So, a house isn’t just an asset; it’s also a “money pit” that requires continuous investment.
Owning property in Spain has indeed greatly enhanced our travel convenience and happiness in Europe. It provides a stable home base, thanks to things like the Spanish property purchase policies, and gives us the confidence to travel on a whim. At the same time, it’s important to be rational about the financial responsibilities that come with it. For me personally, this freedom is completely worth it.
I wonder if anyone else feels the same? Friends who have already bought a home, please share your thoughts! How do you use your Spanish home as a base for European travel? Share your travel routes and money-saving tips!
