I’ve seen a lot of people asking about master’s applications recently, which reminded me of when I was figuring it all out on my own and faced quite a few pitfalls. Now that I’m about to finish my master’s degree, I wanted to organize my DIY application experience and share it with those who are preparing or planning to apply for a master’s at a public university in Spain. Hopefully, this can help you avoid some of the hurdles I faced.

Choosing a University and Program
Spain has many great universities, so it can be a bit overwhelming at first. Besides looking at overall rankings like the QS World University Rankings for your Spanish master’s application, I strongly recommend focusing on program-specific rankings to find schools that excel in your desired field. For example, if you’re interested in business, check out Carlos III in Madrid and Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. For humanities and social sciences, the University of Salamanca and the Complutense University of Madrid are very renowned. The most crucial step is to: go to the university’s official website and check the ‘Plan de Estudios’ (curriculum) for the master’s program; this will give you better insight than any general master’s program rankings in Spain. Seeing if the course structure genuinely interests you is more important than anything else.
Core Document Preparation
Preparing your documents is the most tedious yet crucial part of the application process. The core documents required by most public universities are quite similar. I’ve created a table to help you keep track. Please note: All official documents not in Spanish must undergo an official translation and double legalization.
| Document Name | Notes |
| Copy of Passport | A copy of the entire booklet; ensure it’s not expired |
| Degree and Diploma Certificates | Requires official translation and double legalization |
| University Academic Transcript | Requires official translation and double legalization; some universities require a GPA calculation |
| Proof of Language Proficiency | For Spanish-taught programs, typically DELE B2 or SIELE B2 or higher is required |
| Curriculum Vitae (CV) | The Europass format is recommended as it’s clear and straightforward |
| Statement of Purpose / Motivation Letter | Tailor it to the specific program and university, expressing your passion and suitability |
| Proof of Eligibility for Postgraduate Studies | Obtained from your undergraduate university, certifying that your degree allows you to pursue master’s level studies |
It’s worth noting here that for official master’s programs, you usually don’t need a full degree homologation (homologación). Instead, you’ll do a ‘Declaración de Equivalencia de nota media’ (Statement of Equivalence of Average Grade), which is a simpler process. This can often be done directly within the university’s application system or through the UNEDasiss service.
Application Process and Timeline
Applications for master’s programs at public universities usually open late in the previous year or early in the current year, typically in several rounds. The first round is usually from January to March and has the most available spots, so prepare early and apply early! The general process is: Fill out the online application form -> Upload scanned copies of all documents -> Pay the application fee -> Wait for the admission decision. After each round, the university will publish the list of admitted students. If you’re accepted, you’ll need to pay a seat reservation fee (or deposit) to secure your spot. If your application for a public master’s programs in Spain isn’t successful in the first round, don’t lose hope—giving up is not an option—there are still more chances.
So, that’s a summary of my personal experience from my DIY application. I hope it’s helpful to you all. The specific requirements can vary slightly for each university and program, so when you apply, be sure to read the instructions on the official website carefully. I wish you all the best in getting an offer from your dream university! If you run into any problems during your application, feel free to leave a comment below to discuss. Good luck, everyone!
