Hello everyone, I recently finished registering my child for the new high school year and noticed that many newcomers misunderstand the costs of public high school in Spain, thinking it’s completely free like compulsory education. Today, I’m sharing my experience to discuss what it really costs to attend a public high school, hoping to help those who need it.
First, let’s be clear: tuition at public high schools is indeed free, which is a benefit of the public education system. So, in that sense, the education itself costs nothing. However, it’s not entirely accurate to say it’s completely free, as there are various miscellaneous expenses that we, as parents, have to cover. These are the real major costs.

Breakdown of Spanish Public High School Costs
So, what are the specific costs? Here’s a list for you:
- Textbooks: This is the biggest expense. Each school year, teachers provide a book list. A new set of books usually costs between €200 and €400, depending on the subjects and the school. Many autonomous communities have textbook grant programs, or you can buy secondhand books from senior students to save a significant amount of money.
- School Supplies: Calculators, various notebooks, folders, pens, rulers, etc. A trip to the stationery store before school starts will require a budget of around €50 to €100.
- Parents’ Association Fee (AMPA): The full name is Asociación de Madres y Padres de Alumnos. This is voluntary, typically around €20-€30 per year. Although it’s optional, I highly recommend paying it. The association advocates for student benefits, organizes activities, and it’s a way to support the school.
- Other Costs: This includes a very small mandatory school insurance fee of about €1.20. Additionally, there are school-organized field trips, excursions, or extracurricular activities, which are optional and have separate costs.
To give you a clearer picture, I’ve created a simple table summarizing the approximate annual expenses for Spanish public high schools. Of course, this is just a reference range, and specific costs will vary between different autonomous communities and schools.
Annual Cost Estimation Table

The cost of public high school in Spain isn’t excessive, but it’s definitely not zero. Before each school year begins, we should budget at least €300-€500. I’m sharing this information in the hope that it will be a useful reference for families about to send their children to high school.
