Hello everyone! I’ve noticed a lot of discussion in our groups recently about schooling for children, especially for those who have just moved to Spain. Facing an unfamiliar education system can certainly be overwhelming. Today, I want to talk about how to choose a good public school for your kids. After all, public schools are free and help children better integrate into the local environment, making them the first choice for many families.
When it comes to “rankings,” many might think of the strict 1-2-3 lists common in some countries for public schools in Spain. But in Spain, there is officially no single, mandatory ranking system for public schools. Many of the rankings we see are published by media outlets like El Mundo, based on a wide range of criteria, and they predominantly feature private and semi-private (concertado) schools. However, we can still gauge the quality of public schools from certain data, the most important indicator being the average EVAU/EBAU score. A higher score generally signifies stronger academic performance.
A Look at Some Quality Public Schools in the Madrid Region
As the capital, Madrid has some of the best educational resources. Some public schools have excellent reputations due to their long history and outstanding academic results, making their spots highly sought after. For example:
- Instituto San Mateo: This school is designed for high-achieving students and has very high academic standards.
- IES Ramiro de Maeztu: A historic school, also famous for its basketball program, with consistently high educational quality.
- CEIP San Ildefonso: One of Spain’s oldest schools. Although it’s a primary school, its historical significance and teaching reputation are excellent.
These are just a few examples. Every district in Madrid has reputable schools. The key is to consider the distance from home and the school’s specific educational focus.
Barcelona and Other Regions
Barcelona also has abundant public education resources. However, it’s important to note that public schools in the Catalonia region primarily use Catalan as the language of instruction, with Spanish taught as a second language. Other regions like Andalusia and Valencia also have their own top-tier public schools. Choosing a school is like choosing a house—location is very important.

How to Evaluate if a School is Good?
Besides looking at scores, what other aspects can we, as parents, use to evaluate a school? I’ve put together a simple table for your reference:
| Evaluation Criteria | Description | Key Points to Consider |
| Proyecto Educativo | The school’s educational philosophy and programs | Does it align with your expectations for your child’s future development? |
| Bilingüismo | Bilingual education program | Language ratio, whether teachers are native speakers |
| Resultados Académicos | Academic results | Usually published on the school’s official website; can be used as a key metric |
| Instalaciones | Facilities | Library, labs, sports fields, etc. |
| Opiniones de padres | Parent reviews | Check reviews from other parents on forums and Google Maps |
There’s no single “best” school, only the one that is the “best fit” for your child. Attending school open days, talking to teachers, and getting a feel for the atmosphere is more important than any ranking. Do you know of any other public schools with a great reputation?
