Hello everyone! I’ve seen a lot of questions on the forums lately about applying for a business master’s degree in Spain with a three-year college diploma. I’ve looked into this for a friend before, so I’m sharing my findings here to hopefully help others in the same boat.
Is it really possible to get into a master’s program in Spain, especially at a public university, with a 3-year diploma?
First, I have to be the bearer of some bad news: It is extremely difficult to get directly into an official master’s program (‘título oficial’) at a Spanish public university with a three-year college diploma from China. The main reason is the credit shortfall. A Spanish bachelor’s degree is typically a four-year program requiring 240 ECTS credits. Most official master’s programs require applicants to hold a bachelor’s degree with an equivalent academic standing. A three-year diploma usually converts to only around 180 ECTS credits, leaving a significant ‘credit gap’.

So, is it completely hopeless?
Not entirely. There are mainly two paths you can try, but each has its own challenges:
- Apply for a “Título Propio” (University-Specific Master’s): This is the more realistic option. A “título propio” is a degree awarded by the university itself, and its admission requirements are more flexible, not strictly requiring 240 ECTS credits. Many top public universities have excellent “título propio” programs in their business schools that are highly valuable and well-regarded in the job market. The downside is that tuition fees are usually higher than for official master’s programs.
- Try applying for an Official Master’s: If you have outstanding work experience, some universities might make an exception for specific programs. However, this is definitely handled on a case by case basis. You would need to email the university’s admissions office and the program coordinator directly, and a lot of it comes down to luck.
Top Business Schools to Consider
Although getting directly into an official master’s is tough, it’s always good to know your options. The following are some of the most prestigious public universities in Spain for business. You should focus your research on their “título propio” offerings, as well as general public business programs in Spain.
| University Name | Strengths | Notes |
| Complutense University of Madrid | Strong overall, many options | One of Spain’s largest universities, rich in resources. |
| University of Barcelona | Economics, International Business | Historic, highly ranked globally, located in a popular city. |
| Charles III University of Madrid | Finance, Business Administration | Young and modern, with flagship programs in business and economics. |
| Pompeu Fabra University | Economics and Business | Elite education model, very strong research capabilities. |
For those with a 3-year diploma wanting to study for a business master’s in Spain, it’s not impossible, but you need to shift your strategy and primarily target “título propio” programs. The bar for official master’s degrees is very high, so I wouldn’t recommend betting everything on it. I hope this information is helpful!
