Are Spanish Public Schools Really Free? Let’s Break It Down
Friends who have just moved to Spain often ask me if public schools here are completely free, without costing a single cent. As a mother of two, I have to say, that’s both true and not entirely true. Today, I’ll walk you through the actual costs of attending a public school in Spain to give you a clear picture.
The most crucial point is this: the Spanish Constitution mandates that basic education is free and compulsory. The ‘free’ aspect of Spanish public schools refers to the teaching itself. You don’t have to pay high tuition fees like you would in private schools. This is a certainty, as the government covers teachers’ salaries and the school’s basic operational costs. So, from that perspective, it is indeed free.

However, free doesn’t mean zero cost! There are still daily expenses, which mainly fall into these categories. I’ve created a simple table to make it clearer:
| Item | Approximate Cost | Notes |
| Textbooks | €200-€400 per year | Subsidy programs vary by autonomous community |
| School Supplies | €80-€150 per year | Includes stationery, workbooks, photocopying, etc. |
| Canteen (Comedor) | €90-€140 per month | This is the biggest expense, but it’s optional |
| Association Fee | €20-€50 per year | Parents’ association (AMPA) fee, voluntary |
Beyond the items above, there are also some ‘soft costs.’ For instance, school-organized extracurricular activities like soccer, art, or music classes come with extra fees, typically a few dozen euros per month. Occasional field trips or group activities might also require a contribution of ten or twenty euros. However, none of these are mandatory; it all depends on your family’s choice and your child’s interests. My older child signed up for basketball, while the younger one didn’t join anything, and the school is perfectly fine with that.
While public education in Spain isn’t completely ‘zero-cost,’ it is very affordable compared to the private and semi-private (concertado) schools here. The biggest expense is really the canteen fees. If your child comes home for lunch, the main mandatory annual costs are just for textbooks and supplies. I hope my sharing today can help all the parents out there who are anxiously choosing a school for their children!
