Having just arrived in Spain, with my child about to start school, choosing the right one was a real headache! I believe many parents, like me, have struggled between public, private, and semi-private (concertado) schools. Considering the cost-effectiveness and the opportunity to integrate into the local culture, I focused my research on Spain’s public schools. Here, I’m sharing some of my findings, hoping to start a helpful conversation.
First, let’s be clear: there’s no single standard for “the best.” Many publications, like the well-known newspaper El Mundo, release an annual list of the top 100 schools, but it’s dominated by private institutions. For public schools, we should focus on more practical metrics, such as the quality of their bilingual programs, the variety of extracurricular activities, and most importantly, the average university entrance exam (EBAU) scores of their Bachillerato graduates. Choosing a school is truly a daunting task a major undertaking.

A Look at Top Public Schools in Popular Regions
When it comes to reputation, Madrid and Barcelona are indeed home to some of the best public educational resources. In Madrid, for instance, Instituto San Mateo is considered legendary, famous for its highly selective Bachillerato de Excelencia (Excellence Baccalaureate) program with extremely high admission scores. Similarly, Colegio Ramiro de Maeztu is a prestigious school with a long and distinguished history. The situation in Barcelona is slightly different due to the factor of Catalan-medium instruction, but it also has many highly-regarded schools. It’s essential to do on-site visits and thorough research when choosing.
How to Choose the Right Public School for Your Child?
Beyond just reputation, I’ve created a simple table listing some key aspects to consider during your school search. You can use it as a reference:
| Aspect to Consider | Key Points to Check |
| Language Programs | Is it a bilingual center? What is the quality of the foreign language faculty? |
| Academic Results | What are the school’s average EBAU scores in recent years and its admission rates to top universities? |
| Facilities | Are the library, labs, sports fields, etc., well-equipped? |
| Location | Is it within your home’s catchment area? Is it easily accessible by transport? |
| Local Reputation | Ask neighbors and local friends for firsthand information and opinions. |
This is just my personal research, and it’s certainly not exhaustive. Besides, every family has different needs when it comes to public education in Spain. For example, some parents prioritize a happy, stress-free learning environment, while others focus more on university admission rates. The most important thing is to find the school that is the best fit for your own child. If you have any school recommendations or selection experiences, please share them in the comments below! Many heads are better than one, so let’s work together to find great schools for our kids!
