When I first arrived in Spain, I thought the local interior style was all about the blue and white “Mediterranean look.” After living here for a while and exploring more, I discovered that’s not the whole story, especially when you see some of the Spanish manor villas. The ambiance inside the Fincas or Casas Rurales in the countryside is incredibly diverse; each one has its own story and soul.
Today, I’d like to casually chat about some of the interior characteristics of Spanish villas I’ve observed. This isn’t a professional analysis, just my personal take, and I’d love for you to add your thoughts!
Core Style Elements
The Warmth of Materials
I believe the essence of Spanish interior style lies in its use of natural materials. For instance, many homes feature reddish terracotta floor tiles, which are cool underfoot in summer and wonderfully warm with underfloor heating in winter. Exposed dark wooden beams on the ceiling are another staple, often paired with slightly imperfect, plastered walls. This combination instantly creates a rustic and warm atmosphere—a feeling that modern minimalist design can’t replicate.

The Magic of Color
When it comes to color, beyond the well-known blue and white, earthy tones are the true mainstream. From ocher and terracotta red to olive green, these colors drawn from nature create a very relaxing and inviting feel. For furniture and soft furnishings, there’s a fondness for natural fabrics like linen and cotton, accented with brightly colored handmade ceramics or woven textiles. For example, a burgundy throw blanket can instantly liven up the entire space. It’s best to avoid overusing IKEA standardized furniture throughout the house; hunting in flea markets will add much more character.
Regional Style Differences
Architectural and interior styles vary significantly across Spain’s different regions, a fact tied to history and climate, which is evident in many Spanish country homes. I’ve put together a simple table to give you a glimpse of what a Finca can be like:
| Region | Typical Features | Vibe |
| Andalusia | Moorish arches, colorful tiles (azulejos), inner courtyards | Exotic, vintage |
| Catalonia | Vaulted brick ceilings, Modernista elements | Artistic, bright |
| Northern Regions | Stone walls, dark wood, fireplaces | Rustic, cozy |
