Hola neighbors! I’ve finally finished renovating my backyard pool. The process was a bit of a hassle, but seeing the result now, it was all worth it. I’ve seen many friends on the forum discussing courtyard design, so I’m starting this thread to share a few key design points I’ve gathered for a Spanish-style pool villa, hoping to give you some inspiration.
Capturing the Soul: Essential Design Elements
When it comes to Spanish style, terracotta and blue are the absolute soul of the color palette. The iconic Andalusian white houses we all know use pure white walls as a base for a Spanish villa with a pool, paired with warm, terracotta-tiled roofs for a visually pleasing effect. You can use this color scheme extensively in your courtyard and pool design. For instance, white walls, terracotta floor tiles, and blue mosaic tiles in the pool immediately create a Mediterranean feel! Additionally, arches and wrought-iron window grilles are very classic elements that can add depth and a vintage charm to the space.
A Symphony of Pool and Greenery
The pool itself can be a modern, simple rectangle or a more natural, free-form kidney or irregular shape. I personally feel that if your Spanish villa with a pool's courtyard has enough space, an irregularly shaped pool better matches the relaxed Spanish style. The choice of plants around the pool is also crucial and shouldn’t be overlooked. I absolutely love bougainvillea; it’s so charming when it covers a wall. Add a few lemon trees, olive trees, or large succulents, and you’ll fully capture that Mediterranean holiday vibe.

The choice of paving material determines the overall feel and texture. Terracotta tiles are, of course, a classic for a Spanish villa with a pool, but slip resistance and maintenance are also important considerations. I’ve made a simple comparison chart for your reference:
| Material | Pros | Cons | Recommended Area |
| Terracotta Tiles | Authentic style, natural & rustic | Fragile, requires regular maintenance | Sun-drenched terraces |
| Stone Slabs | Durable, good slip resistance | Higher cost, absorbs heat in summer | Pool surrounds, walkways |
| Exposed Aggregate | Unique texture, cost-effective | Average comfort underfoot | Decorative areas |
Creating the ideal Spanish pool courtyard is all about finding a balance between traditional elements and modern practicality. My design isn’t perfect, of course~, and I actually went a little over budget, haha. But the most important thing is that you love it.
