Lately, there’s been a lot of talk on the forums about investing and relocating, and several people have DMed me asking about the Costa del Sol, particularly Marbella. I just came back from a trip there, so I thought I’d share some of my initial observations to get the conversation started.
Marbella’s Star Villa Communities
When people think of luxury homes in Marbella, they often picture places with private marinas and golf courses, like in this post about Marbella luxury homes. Indeed, the top villa communities here are centered around the best resources. The most well-known ones include:
- The Golden Mile: This is the prime strip connecting Marbella town center and Puerto Banús. It’s a traditional wealthy area, close to the beach, with excellent amenities. The only downside is that since it’s an older development, many homes may require renovation.
- Sierra Blanca: Situated at the foot of La Concha mountain, this area boasts incredible views overlooking the entire coastline. It offers top-tier privacy and security, and it’s home to many new, modern-style villa developments.
- La Zagaleta: This place is
unbelievable. It’s one of the most exclusive private estates in all of Europe, offering extreme privacy with its own golf courses and equestrian center. Residents are exclusively the super-rich. For ordinary people, even scheduling a viewing for a Marbella hilltop villa here can require a financial screening.
Here’s a photo to give you a sense of the vibe—blue skies, the sea, and a private pool are practically standard features.

Most luxury villas heavily emphasize outdoor living space; huge terraces, gardens, and barbecue areas are basic features. Plus, with over 300 days of sunshine a year on the Costa del Sol, pools get a lot of use—unlike in northern Spain, where the pool at a Marbella villa might only be usable for a couple of months in the summer. For anyone who loves the sun and the outdoors, it’s paradise.
What’s the General Price Range?
Prices can vary widely depending on the exact location, views, size, and level of renovation. I can only offer a very rough guide to give you a general idea, so please do not treat these as official quotes!
| Area | Starting Price (Approx.) | Features |
| The Golden Mile | €3M+ | Prime location, convenient lifestyle |
| Sierra Blanca | €4M+ | Exceptional views, high security |
| La Zagaleta | €6M+ | Ultimate privacy, luxury amenities |
| Nueva Andalucía | €1.5M+ | Golfer’s paradise, relatively more affordable |
The prices in this table are for detached villas; apartments are considerably cheaper.
Overall, Marbella is more than just a tourist hotspot; it’s a second home of choice for many of Europe’s wealthy. The community is highly international, and the quality of life is genuinely high, though the cost of living is correspondingly steep. What are your impressions of Marbella? Anyone here living in the south of Spain? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
