Hello everyone on the forum! I’ve been a long-time lurker and recently settled down in the suburbs of Alicante, moving from a piso (apartment) to a chalet (house). The process was quite an ordeal, but it’s finally done. I’ve noticed most discussions here are about apartments, so I wanted to share my real experience with a detached house. This can serve as a reference for those considering Spanish villas—a kind of ’buyer’s review,' if you will.
My Honest Feelings After Moving In
The biggest change is the freedom and space! No more worrying about noisy neighbors, and the kids can run around and play in the yard safely. Having friends over for a BBQ on weekends, sipping wine and sunbathing in the garden—it’s a feeling you just can’t get in an apartment. Our place isn’t huge, but the front and back yards combined are over 300 square meters. Planting some flowers really makes life feel slower and more relaxed. Enough talk, let me show you a picture. Our house is a lovely example of Spanish villa architecture; here’s a look at our backyard:

The Sweet “Burdens”
But there’s always a price to pay for the good things. I used to think garden care was easy, but it turns out it’s a ton of physical and technical work. Weeding, watering, pest control… you can’t skip any of it. Then there’s the pool. It looks beautiful, but the cleaning and maintenance costs aren’t low. And most importantly: You must have a car! You must have a car! You must have a car
! I can’t stress this enough. Living in the suburbs without a car is like being stranded. You need to drive for everything, from grocery shopping to taking the kids to school. It just can’t compare to the convenience of living in the city center.
Security is another consideration. Although our neighborhood is quite safe, a standalone house requires more vigilance. Installing a security system is essential. Also, you’re responsible for all the minor repairs. In an apartment, I could just call building management for a burnt-out lightbulb; now I have to do everything myself. I feel like I’m becoming an all-around handyman.
A Comparison of Daily Expenses
Many people wonder if the expenses for a detached house are much higher than for an apartment. I’ve made a simple comparison table to give you a clear idea:
| Item | Chalet (Detached House)
| Piso (Apartment) |
|—|—|—|
| IBI (Property Tax) | Higher | Lower |
| Comunidad (Community Fees) | Almost zero | 50-150€ |
| Utilities (Water, Electricity, Gas) | Higher | Average |
| Transportation Costs | Gas, insurance, maintenance | Public transport is an option |
Although there are no community fees, the combined costs of utilities, transportation, and potential maintenance mean my monthly fixed expenses are still higher than when I lived in an apartment. But in return, I get a significant improvement in my quality of life, so I think it’s a worthwhile investment. What do you all think? Are there any other chalet owners here? Feel free to share your money-saving tips or gardening experiences. Let’s discuss!
