Hello everyone! Having been in Spain for a while, I’ve become fascinated with the architecture here, especially the villas scattered across the countryside and by the sea. It feels like every house has its own story. I’ve recently done some research and found there’s a lot to it, so I’ve put together this guide to share with you all. I’d love to hear any additions or corrections from the experts here!
A Roundup of Common Villa Styles in Spain
Mediterranean Style
This is probably the style most people are familiar with. When you think of Spain, the image of houses with white walls and blue windows often comes to mind. This style is particularly common on the Costa del Sol and the Balearic Islands. Its main feature is the extensive use of white walls, which reflect the strong sunlight and keep the interior cool. They are typically paired with blue or terracotta-colored doors, windows, and tiles. With bougainvillea in the courtyard, the holiday vibe is instantly complete!

Andalusian Style
The style in the southern region of Andalusia is heavily influenced by Moorish culture and differs from the Mediterranean style. Its soul lies in the central courtyard (patio). The house is built around a beautiful courtyard, which typically features a fountain, abundant greenery, and colorful tiles (azulejos). Escaping the summer heat in the courtyard is incredibly pleasant. Wrought iron window grilles and balconies are also a distinctive feature.
Rural Style (Finca) & Catalan Farmhouse (Masia)
As you move inland, you’ll find more rural-style Spanish villas. These are often called Fincas, which refer to country estates or farmhouses. Building materials are typically locally sourced, such as stone walls, thick wooden beams, and terracotta floor tiles, giving them a very rustic and timeless appearance. In the region of Catalonia, there’s also a unique type of dwelling called a Masia. These are large, ancient stone farmhouses, known for their long history and solid construction. Many have now been converted into boutique hotels or restaurants.
To help you compare, I’ve made a simple table:
| Style | Key Features | Common Regions |
| Mediterranean | White walls, blue/terracotta roofs, abundant light | Coastal areas, Balearic Islands |
| Andalusian | Central courtyard, Moorish arches, colorful tiles | Andalusia |
| Rural/Finca | Stone walls, wooden beams, rustic and natural | Inland, rural areas |
| Masia | Large stone structure, historic, robust | Catalonia |
Of course, Spain’s architectural styles are much more diverse than just these, and modern designs often blend various elements. Which style do you prefer? Or are there any unique buildings near your home? Feel free to share photos and let’s chat! A joy to look at, even if I can’t afford one.
