I’ve been looking at properties in the Málaga area recently, especially villas with yards, and I’ve found it’s quite a complex process. After countless viewings and a few pitfalls, I decided to start this thread to share my thoughts, create a personal record, and hopefully help others who are also considering a move.
Why Choose Málaga?
When I first came to Spain, I lived in Barcelona and Madrid. Big cities are certainly vibrant, but they also come with a fast-paced, high-stress lifestyle. Moving to Andalusia was like a breath of fresh air; I instantly felt more relaxed. Málaga offers sunshine, beaches, a relatively low cost of living, and is highly international. With its well-connected airport, flying back home or traveling to other parts of Europe is incredibly convenient. For anyone seeking a high quality of life, this place is paradise, a true Málaga villa living experience. Especially after having kids, I found myself dreaming of a home with a pool and a small garden where they could run around and play.

A Comparison of Popular Areas
I’ve mainly been focusing on a few towns around Málaga, each with its own pros, cons, and significant price differences. I’ve put together a simple table based on my personal impressions from property viewings. It might not be perfectly precise, but it should serve as a useful reference:
| Area | Key Features | Price Range | Best Suited For |
| Marbella | Luxurious, top-tier amenities, prime location | Very High | Those with a large budget seeking a luxury lifestyle |
| Benalmádena | Good value for money, convenient, popular with tourists | Medium-High | Families, buy-to-let investments |
| Mijas | Picturesque white village charm, quiet | Medium | Those who prefer tranquility and traditional charm |
| Estepona | Up-and-coming area, strong “garden city” feel | Medium-High | Those looking for new builds, family holidays |
Marbella truly lives up to its reputation as an affluent area. The properties are stunning and the environment is beautiful, but the prices… well, one can dream. Benalmádena and Mijas feel more down-to-earth, with many great villas at more reasonable prices. I’m currently focusing on the Mijas Costa area in particular, as it’s close to the beach and has all the necessary amenities.
A Few Tips for House Hunting
Finally, here are a few tips I’ve picked up while house hunting. First, always check the property’s orientation. A south-facing house gets better sunlight in the winter, which can save a lot on heating bills. Second, be sure to ask about community fees (comunidad) and property taxes (IBI) in advance, as these are significant recurring expenses. Third, try to get a place with a garage if possible. The summer sun is intense, and a garage will protect your car. Also, while older houses have their charm, they can come with issues like outdated wiring, plumbing, and waterproofing. If you don’t have the energy for a major renovation, it’s better to focus on newer properties. I hope everyone finds their dream home on the beautiful Costa del Sol!
