I’ve been in Spain for a while now and have started thinking about buying a house. I’ve been endlessly scrolling through Idealista and Fotocasa. After looking around, I’m most drawn to the chalets with a small yard—it just seems like the ideal way of life. However, I’ve realized there’s a lot to it, so I wanted to start a thread to chat about it and hear from people with experience.
A Showcase of Villa Styles
There are so many villa styles in Spain! The most classic is probably the Mediterranean style, with its white walls, blue accents, and terracotta roof tiles, complemented by arched doors and windows. It instantly gives you that sunny coastal vibe and is very common in the southern regions of Andalusia and Valencia. Another popular style is the rustic country style, which uses a lot of stone and natural wood, creating a very natural atmosphere perfect for those who love a quiet, pastoral life. Of course, we’re also seeing more and more modern minimalist styles with large floor-to-ceiling windows, open-plan layouts, and a strong design focus.

Pros vs. Cons
I’ve put together a simple list of pros and cons based on my house-hunting experience. You can see if this makes sense and check out these Spanish villa rankings; feel free to add your own points:
| Pros | Cons |
| Spacious and private | Higher purchase price and taxes |
| Own garden and/or pool | Garden and pool maintenance is time-consuming and labor-intensive |
| Quiet living environment | Usually far from the city center, car-dependent |
| Simpler neighborly relations | High maintenance costs |
For those of you living in a chalet, what’s the best part and what’s the biggest headache? Personally, I dream of having BBQs in my own yard, but I’m worried about summer bugs and lawn care. I’ve also heard that pool maintenance can be a bottomless pit.
Speaking of areas, I’m personally looking at some satellite towns around Valencia, like L’Eliana or Rocafort. The villa communities there seem well-planned and offer good value for money. Has anyone looked at nice developments or areas in other cities? For example, Las Rozas near Madrid or Sant Cugat near Barcelona seem to be in a completely different price range. Sometimes it really feels like buying a house isn’t just about finding a place to live, it’s about choosing a lifestyle.
Anyway, I’m still figuring things out and learning as I go. I hope this post can get the ball rolling and that experienced members will be kind enough to share their advice. It could also serve as a reference for others who are house-hunting like me. Sharing information and experiences is always better than trying to figure it all out alone!
