I just bought a small villa near Malaga and I’m planning to renovate it myself, but I’m completely paralyzed by indecision when it comes to choosing the exterior and interior colors. I initially thought for a Spanish house, a simple coat of white paint would do the trick, but after some research, I’ve realized there’s so much more to it. I’m starting this thread to share what I’ve learned and hopefully get some advice from you all!
The Classic Mediterranean Vibe: White and Blue
This is probably the combination everyone is most familiar with, especially in places like Santorini in Greece or the white villages of Andalusia in Spain, where this style is everywhere. Pure white walls reflect the intense sunlight to the greatest extent, keeping the interior cool, which is the main reason for its popularity in Southern Europe. Paired with sky blue or royal blue doors, windows, and railings, you instantly get that authentic feel! This combination is simple, refreshing, and timeless.

Bold Warm Tones: Terracotta and Ochre
Besides white, many Fincas or villas in the Spanish countryside also favor warm tones. For instance, terracotta, ochre, or a soft apricot yellow are popular Spanish villa colors. These hues are derived from Spain’s red earth and rocks, carrying a rustic, warm feel that blends perfectly with the surrounding olive groves and vineyards. If the interior is decorated with natural wood furniture and wrought iron details, it creates a wonderful rustic, vintage atmosphere. I’m personally very drawn to this color palette; it feels so warm and inviting.
| Color Scheme | Style Characteristics | Suitable Areas |
| White + Blue | Refreshing, bright, classic Mediterranean | Coastal regions, sunny southern areas |
| Terracotta + Ochre | Warm, rustic, vintage countryside | Inland rural areas, historic buildings |
| Soft Beige + Green | Cozy, natural, tranquil pastoral | All regions, especially for garden villas |
There are also some softer, neutral tones, such as beige or a light cream, which look fantastic paired with dark green shutters. This combination is not as striking as white and blue, nor as distinctive as terracotta, offering a more understated and elegant choice. Many modern villa communities favor this scheme for its sophisticated look. I’m curious, what colors did you all paint your houses? Or do you have any special color combinations to recommend? I’m calling for a brainstorm to rescue me from this choice paralysis!
