I’ve just moved to Spain and am currently house-hunting for a small villa along the southern coast. After looking around, I’ve realized that Spanish villa exteriors are incredibly detailed and diverse, a far cry from the cookie-cutter styles you might see elsewhere. Each house has its own personality. I’m starting this thread to chat about it and get some inspiration. Let’s see what kind of facade designs everyone likes.
Classic Mediterranean Charm
The most common and iconic style for [villa facades] is, of course, the classic Mediterranean style. The signature pure white walls, paired with blue or terracotta-colored doors, windows, and roof tiles, are instantly uplifting. This style is especially prevalent in the regions of Andalusia and Valencia. The white walls are not only beautiful but also practical, as they reflect the intense sunlight, keeping the interior cooler in the summer. The downside might be that white walls get dirty easily and require regular maintenance and repainting to avoid looking old over time.

A Fusion of Rustic and Modern
Besides the pure white Mediterranean look, I’ve also seen many villas that incorporate stone elements. For example, using rugged natural stone to decorate corners, porches, or parts of the walls, combined with wooden shutters or terrace railings, adds a touch of rustic charm. This design seems to be more popular in Catalonia and the northern regions. There’s also a very popular modern minimalist style now, featuring large floor-to-ceiling glass windows, straight rooflines, and exterior walls in sophisticated grays or beiges. It looks incredibly cool and design-forward.
When it comes to facade materials, there are quite a few options. Besides traditional paint, there are also tiles, cultured stone, wood, and more. I did a little research and made a simple comparison of the pros and cons of different materials:
| Material Type | Pros | Cons |
| Exterior Paint | Wide color selection, affordable, easy to apply | Average durability, needs periodic repainting |
| Natural Stone | High-end texture, very durable, good insulation | Expensive, complex installation |
| Tiles/Cultured Stone | Easy to clean, good water resistance, variety of styles | Mid-to-high price range, can look a bit plain if used over large areas |
| Wood Siding | Natural feel, unique style | Requires anti-corrosion and pest treatment, high maintenance cost |
Each style and material has its merits. Personally, I’m leaning towards a design with white walls accented by partial stone features. It feels like it preserves that sunny Spanish vibe while adding a sense of substance. What are your thoughts on villa facades? Do you have any pitfalls to avoid or experiences to share? For instance, any materials you’d strongly advise against, or colors that you get tired of after a few years? Let’s discuss!
