Hi everyone, I’ve been a lurker for a while and this is my first time posting for help!
I recently bought a Chalet with a yard near Valencia, which is a dream come true, haha. However, I’m now facing an empty yard and feeling a bit overwhelmed, with no idea where to start. I don’t have any experience with this from back home, and the design plans I’ve seen look too complicated and likely a headache to maintain. So, I wanted to ask the community, especially those who have experience with their own gardens, if you have any practical landscape suggestions to share.

My Initial Thoughts and Questions
The yard is about 200 square meters and gets a lot of sun, which is both a blessing and a challenge. I’m leaning towards a Mediterranean style—something relaxed and natural, not too formal. I have a few main questions:
- Plant Selection: What plants look good but are also drought-tolerant and low-maintenance? For example, are olive and lemon trees standard for Spanish gardens? And what about flowering shrubs like bougainvillea and lavender—are they easy to grow in the local climate?
- Zone Planning: I’d like to have a small barbecue area and a cozy corner for reading and coffee, with the rest for flowers and plants. What’s a reasonable layout? What’s a good ratio of hardscape to lawn? A friend mentioned that maintaining a lawn can be expensive in terms of water and money during the summer.
- Maintenance Costs: This is my biggest concern. Besides the initial investment, what are the approximate ongoing costs for water, electricity, fertilizer, and tools?
I’m hoping to be as frugal as possible, as owning a house is already a major expense.
Comparison of Common Mediterranean Plants
I’ve done some research online and put together a simple table. I’m not sure if it’s accurate, so I’d appreciate it if you could take a look and add your thoughts:
| Plant Name | Pros | Cons |
| Olive Tree | Iconic, drought-tolerant, fruit is edible | Slow-growing, requires significant space |
| Lemon Tree | Evergreen, fragrant fruit, practical | May require pest control for good villa landscaping, and may need protection in winter in some areas |
| Lavender | Pleasant scent, repels insects, drought-tolerant | Needs good drainage, requires pruning after summer |
| Bougainvillea | Long flowering season, vibrant colors, great for climbing | Has thorns, fast-growing and needs frequent pruning |
| Rosemary | Culinary herb, drought-tolerant, virtually maintenance-free | Can become overgrown and look untidy |
In short, I’m completely lost and would appreciate any guidance. Please share your valuable experiences, or recommend any reliable gardening companies or designers. Any advice would be incredibly helpful. Thank you all in advance! I’d be extremely grateful
