Hi everyone! I’ve recently settled down near Málaga, having bought a house with a small patio, and I couldn’t be more excited! However, decorating has been a huge project, and I’m currently stuck on the windows. The Spanish sun is incredibly intense, so window treatments need to be not only beautiful but, more importantly, practical. After a lot of research and getting some advice from my neighbors, I wanted to share what I’ve learned and also hear your suggestions.
The Three Main Choices for Window Treatments
In Spain, the approach to windows is quite different from what I’m used to back home. The three most common options here are shutters, roller blinds, and traditional curtains. Many houses, especially apartment buildings, come with pre-installed exterior roller shutters (persianas). They are excellent for blocking out light and providing security, but they can feel a bit ‘hard’ and lack a cozy, homely touch.

That’s why the interior decoration for windows in Spain becomes so important. Personally, I’m torn between a combination of roller blinds and curtains. Roller blinds are minimalist, save space, and are perfect for a modern decor style, plus they are easy to clean. On the other hand, curtains are better at creating atmosphere, especially those made of cotton-linen, which perfectly complement a Mediterranean-style home and instantly set the mood. My neighbors told me that many people opt for a combination of sheer curtains and a layer of thick drapes, which is very practical as it balances daytime light with nighttime privacy.
Pros and Cons of Different Materials
The material is key when deciding on a solution. I’ve organized the information I’ve gathered into a simple table for your reference:
| Type | Pros | Cons | Best for |
| Roller Blinds | Minimalist & modern, space-saving, easy to clean | Less light-blocking than heavy curtains, limited styles | Kitchen, office, small bedrooms |
| Venetian Blinds | Flexible light control, available in wood, aluminum, etc. | Prone to dust, difficult to clean | Office, bathroom |
| Fabric Curtains | Versatile styles, good insulation, creates a cozy atmosphere | Take up space, require regular washing | Living room, master bedroom |
| Sheer Curtains | Soften light, provide privacy, highly decorative | Poor light-blocking, need to be paired with heavy curtains | Any space where natural light is desired |
For my living room, I chose white cotton-linen sheer curtains paired with dark gray heavy drapes, and I think the effect is quite nice. It keeps the living room feeling bright and airy, and when I want to watch a movie or take a nap, pulling the heavy curtains provides enough blackout. For the bedroom, I went with blackout roller blinds, mainly to get a good night’s sleep, haha! How have you all decorated your windows? Do you have any special recommendations or lessons learned the hard way to share? Let’s discuss!
