With the weather getting nicer, I’ve been getting the itch to build a small wooden cabin in the countryside for getaways. I’ve done a fair bit of research on the cost of building a wooden villa in Spain and found there’s a lot to consider. I’m starting this thread to share my findings for anyone with similar ideas and welcome insights and corrections from those in the know!
Core Factors Influencing the Cost
First, it’s important to understand that giving a single, fixed price is unrealistic, as costs can vary widely. Generally, excluding the cost of land and various permit application fees, the construction cost for the wooden house itself currently ranges from €800 to €1,800 per square meter. This price range is primarily influenced by the following factors:
- Type of Wood: This is the biggest cost driver. Pine is the most common and cost-effective option. However, if you’re looking for better durability and aesthetics, you might opt for fir or higher-grade timber, which will naturally increase the price. This is also a key consideration when renovating a wooden villa.
- Construction Method: Will you choose a prefabricated modular home or on-site construction? Prefabricated wooden houses are manufactured in a factory and assembled on-site, which means shorter construction times and more predictable costs. Building from scratch on-site offers more design freedom but incurs higher labor and time costs.
- Design Complexity and Finishing Standards: A simple, box-shaped layout will be significantly cheaper than a complex design with a loft, large terrace, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The cost of interior finishes—such as the brand and quality of kitchen and bathroom fixtures, flooring, doors, and windows—also varies greatly depending on your choices.

A Simplified Budget Estimate
To give you a more concrete idea, I’ve created a simple table. Let’s assume we’re building a 100-square-meter, mid-range quality wooden house to see where the money might go.
| Cost Item | Estimated Cost (€) | Notes |
| House Structure | 120,000 | Based on €1,200/m² |
| Architect/Technician Fees | 10,000 - 15,000 | Design, project supervision, etc. |
| Municipal Permits | 5,000 - 8,000 | Taxes and fees vary by region |
| Foundation Work | 10,000 - 20,000 | Depends on terrain and geology |
| Utility Connections (Water/Electricity) | 3,000 - 6,000 | Cheaper if the plot already has connections |
| Total | 148,000 - 169,000 | The real money pit is the land itself |
Finally, it’s worth noting that beyond all of the above, the cost of the land is the real major expense, especially in popular coastal areas or near major cities. A plot where you can legally build can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of euros. Therefore, before you even consider building a wooden house, you must sort out the land situation first. The entire process, from buying the land to getting the keys, can easily take a year and a half or more, even if everything goes smoothly, so a lot of patience is required. I hope this information is helpful. Let’s discuss and share more ideas!
