Hello everyone, I just moved to Spain recently and have been figuring out how to apply for the health card, the famous Tarjeta Sanitaria. I finally got mine last week, and the process was smoother than I expected. I’m sharing my fresh experience here, which might be helpful alongside this info on Spanish health insurance prices, hoping it can help those in need.
When living in Spain, this card is practically a lifesaver. Whether you’re a student, working, or here for family reunification, you can generally apply as long as you have legal residency and are registered and contributing to the social security system through your Spanish health insurance, or are a dependent of a family member who is. With this card, you can get free or heavily subsidized medical care and prescriptions at public hospitals and local health centers (Centro de Salud), which is incredibly important!
Application Process and Documents
To apply for the card, the first step is to go to the local health center (Centro de Salud) corresponding to your registered address. How do you find it? Just search for “Centro de Salud” plus your postal code on Google Maps. Before you go, make sure you have all the necessary documents to avoid a wasted trip.
Required Documents
| Document Name | Description |
| Passport and Residence Card (TIE/NIE) | Original and photocopy to prove your identity. |
| Proof of Address (Empadronamiento) | A recent certificate, usually issued within the last 3 months. |
| Social Security Entitlement Certificate | A document called “Documento acreditativo del derecho a la asistencia sanitaria,” which you can apply for and print from the Social Security office’s website. |
| Application Form | Usually available at the health center’s reception desk to be filled out on-site. |
Bring these documents to your health center and tell the receptionist you’d like to apply for the “Tarjeta Sanitaria.” They will guide you through the process. It’s quite fast; after reviewing your documents, they will give you a temporary paper certificate that you can use for medical appointments immediately. The official plastic card will be mailed to your home address in a few weeks.

How to Use and Replace the Card
Once you receive your card, it will display your personal details, your assigned family doctor (médico de cabecera), and your health center information. For future appointments, the first step is to book an appointment with your family doctor. In most regions, you can do this conveniently by phone or through an official mobile app. In case of an emergency, which is covered by your Spanish health insurance, you can go directly to the hospital’s emergency department (Urgencias).
What if you accidentally lose your card? Don’t panic! Replacing it is also simple. Just go back to your local health center with your identification, tell the staff you’ve lost your card, and they will help you process a new one. The replacement card will also be mailed to your home. In short, this card is a fundamental safeguard for a worry-free life in Spain, so be sure to get it sorted out as soon as possible!
