With the weather getting better and better, I’ve been thinking about an island vacation. Last summer, some friends and I rented an entire villa in Mallorca, and the experience was absolutely amazing—so much more freedom than staying in a hotel! I’ve seen some people on the forums asking about it recently, so I decided to put together my experiences as a reference for anyone planning a trip to Mallorca.
Why Choose a Villa Rental?
The privacy is unbeatable. You get an entire house to yourself, often with a private pool you can use whenever you want, without having to share with anyone. Plus, the space is perfect for families or groups of friends. You can play games together in the living room, cook in the kitchen—it really feels like a home away from home. When you split the cost, it can even be more affordable than a hotel. Barbecues and stargazing in the yard at night are experiences a hotel just can’t offer. Of course, the downside is that the location might be a bit more remote than a city-center hotel, so renting a car is almost always necessary.

How to Choose an Area?
Mallorca isn’t massive, but it’s not small either, so choosing the right location is crucial. Each area has a very different vibe.
- Around Palma: If you love a bustling atmosphere and want to be close to the city for shopping and bars, the area around the capital, Palma, is your best bet. The villas here tend to be more modern, and transportation and amenities are very convenient.
- The Northwest Mountains: This area is a paradise for art lovers and hikers. The scenery is stunning, with orange groves and olive trees everywhere, and the towns are incredibly charming. Many villas here are converted old stone houses, full of character. However, the roads are winding, so you’ll need some skill behind the wheel.
- The Northeast: This region boasts fantastic family-friendly beaches with shallow waters and long sandy shores, making it ideal for those with children. The old town of Pollença is also very charming. We stayed near here last year, spending our days at the beach and evenings back at our villa in the hills—it was perfect.
A Quick Comparison of the Areas
| Area | Pros | Cons |
| Around Palma | Convenient, lively, full amenities | Crowded with tourists, higher prices |
| Northwest Mountains | Unique scenery, quiet, stylish | Inconvenient transport, winding roads |
| Northeast | Family-friendly, excellent beaches | Relatively quiet, limited nightlife |
Booking and Important Tips
For booking, I compared Airbnb, Booking.com, and some specialized villa rental websites. I ended up booking through Airbnb, as I felt it had more listings and a wider variety of options. When booking, be sure to read the reviews carefully, especially the recent ones. Pay close attention to a few key things: the actual distance from the beach/town, the cleanliness of the pool, how well the air conditioning works, and the host’s responsiveness. It’s best to book several months in advance, especially during the high season, or all the good places will be snapped up. Oh, and remember to confirm whether all fees are included. Some places, including unique properties like Mallorca’s cave villas, might charge extra for electricity or cleaning. I hope everyone finds their dream house in Mallorca!
