Yesterday, while I was shopping in Sol, I didn’t pay attention for a moment and my backpack was unzipped. My wallet vanished… Losing the cash was a minor issue, but my residence card, bank cards, and most importantly, my Spanish Health Card were all gone! I totally panicked; it felt like my world was collapsing. After reporting it to the police, I calmed down today and started the process of replacing all my documents. I decided to write down my experience with replacing the health card first, hoping it can help others in the same boat.

Step 1: Reporting the Loss by Phone and Booking an Appointment
When you realize your card is missing, the first thing to do is NOT to run to your health center! I made that mistake initially… The correct procedure is to first call the health service for your autonomous community. For the Community of Madrid, for example, you can call 012 or 91 580 42 60. Once connected, explain your situation to the operator. They will verify your identity by checking your personal information. After verification, they will cancel your old card in the system to prevent misuse. Then, the operator will book an appointment for you to go to your assigned local health center (Centro de Salud) to apply for a new card.
Step 2: Going to the Health Center to Process the Application
When your appointment time comes, remember to bring the necessary documents. Although requirements might vary slightly between autonomous communities, they are generally the same. Here is what I brought today for your reference:
| Required Documents | Notes |
| Original passport or residence card | To prove your identity. If your residence card was also lost, bring your passport. (A valid ID is essential for any health-related process, like booking a medical appointment). |
| Police report (denuncia) | It’s not always required, but it’s definitely a good idea to bring it to prove your card was stolen. |
| Proof of residence (Certificado de Empadronamiento) | You might need this if your address has changed or if the information in the system is unclear. (This is also relevant for other card types, like the [VIP health card]). |
| Proof of Social Security affiliation | Sometimes required to prove you are still covered by social security. I downloaded it on the spot using Cl@ve PIN on my phone. |
At the health center, go to the reception desk (atención al paciente/admisión), take a number, and wait in line. Hand your documents to the staff. They will process everything in their system. Once they confirm your information is correct, they will usually print a temporary paper certificate for you on the spot. This paper certificate has the same legal validity as the official card, so you can use it to see a doctor or buy prescription medicine at a pharmacy.
They will inform you that the new official card will be mailed to your home address within a few weeks. I was told today that it would take about 2-3 weeks. For now, I have to make do with this paper certificate. The whole process was smoother than I expected, and the staff were very helpful. I hope my new card arrives soon! And I hope that thief gets an upset stomach
!
So that’s my experience. Although losing your belongings is incredibly frustrating, you just have to tackle the problems one by one. Everyone, please be careful with your personal belongings when you’re out and about! I hope this post can be of some help to those who need it. If you have experience with replacing a card in other autonomous communities, or with processes like the annual health card renewal
, please feel free to share your story in the comments below!
