I just moved to Barcelona not long ago and have been researching private health insurance here. Although there’s public healthcare, I’ve heard the waiting times can be quite long, and some treatments aren’t covered by the Spanish health insurance system. So, I’m thinking of getting private insurance for peace of mind and for quicker, more convenient access to healthcare in the future.
I’ve spent the last few days doing my homework online, and my head is spinning. I’ve been mainly comparing some of the major companies like Adeslas, Sanitas, and Asisa. It seems like they are the ‘big three’ in Spain, all with extensive networks. However, when it comes to service and reputation, online reviews are mixed, and I’m having trouble deciding. What’s most important to me is a wide selection of specialists, convenient appointment booking, and a straightforward claims process.

I’ve put together a simple table with the points I’m most concerned about to make it easier for everyone to discuss. The prices are rough estimates based on the basic, no-copay plans I saw on their official websites. This might vary depending on individual circumstances, so it’s just for reference.
| Insurance Company | Approx. Monthly Fee | Main Advantages | Online Complaints |
| Adeslas | €50 - €70 | Reportedly the largest by customer volume, with a very extensive network of clinics and hospitals. | Some users report that customer service is hard to reach by phone, and certain authorization processes can be slow. |
| Sanitas | €55 - €75 | Highly international, offers English-language services, and has many of its own exclusive hospitals and dental clinics. | Premiums are slightly higher, and some plans have limited dental coverage. |
| Asisa | €45 - €65 | Seems to have a price advantage; it’s also a long-established company with a good medical network. | Its marketing presence doesn’t seem as strong as the other two, and in some cities with Spanish medical recruitment, the choice of affiliated doctors for your Spanish health insurance might be slightly more limited. |
Asking for your help
!
I’d like to ask the experienced members of this forum: Is anyone currently using one of these insurance companies? Could you share your actual experiences? For example, what has your experience been with seeing specialists? Is the appointment booking app easy to use? Have you run into any ‘traps’ or issues with claims? Also, apart from these three, are there any other high-value-for-money insurance companies you would recommend? Thanks in advance to everyone! Any little bit of information would be a great help!
