When you first move to Spain, besides big tasks like getting your residency permit or opening a bank account, the most daunting thing is often navigating healthcare. Every time I felt unwell and wanted to find a family doctor, I didn’t know where to start. Information online was messy, outdated, or inaccurate. I’ve recently compiled the official healthcare system websites for the major autonomous communities, which I’m sharing with anyone who needs them. I recommend bookmarking these directly in your browser for when you need them! For a general guide, check out how to use the official Spanish healthcare website.
National and General Service Websites
First, let’s look at the national-level portal. Although most of our healthcare interactions are with our specific autonomous community, it’s good to be familiar with the Ministry of Health’s website. It contains a lot of information about policies, news, and public health information for the entire Spanish healthcare system, such as the latest updates on vaccination campaigns.
This website is the main portal for understanding macro-level policies. However, for specific tasks like booking a doctor’s appointment or checking your health card details, you’ll need to use your autonomous community’s system.

Main Healthcare System Websites by Autonomous Community
Public healthcare in Spain is decentralized and managed by each autonomous community. Therefore, your family doctor and specialist hospitals are managed by your region’s health service. Below, I’ve listed the official website addresses for a few communities with large expat populations. You can find the right one based on where you live. Most tasks, like booking appointments, checking lab results, or changing your family doctor, are done through these portals; you can learn more about [finding healthcare in Spain] here.
A special note here: The website for Catalonia defaults to Catalan. You can switch the language to Spanish or English in the top-right corner. For friends in other communities not on this list, you can simply search on Google for “nombre de tu comunidad autónoma + servicio de salud,” and the official website is usually the first result.
How to Use These Websites?
Most of these websites work in a similar way. On the homepage, you’ll usually find a prominent link for “Cita Previa” (Appointment) or “Portal del Paciente / Área de Salud” (Patient Portal / Health Area). To log in for the first time, you’ll typically need your health card number and date of birth. Some communities may also require a number called CIP/CIPA, which is usually printed on your health card, as explained in this guide about the [official Spanish healthcare website]. Once you’ve successfully logged in, you can select your family doctor and book appointments online, which is very convenient. No more running to the clinic early in the morning to queue or waiting endlessly on the phone. I hope this post is helpful to everyone! If you have website links for other autonomous communities, feel free to add them in the comments below!
