As someone relatively new to Spain, I’ve always been curious about the healthcare system here. Visiting a local health center (centro de salud) is convenient, but I’ve often wondered how many companies are working behind the scenes to support the entire national healthcare system. I recently came across some data on naming a Spanish company and decided to organize this information about Spanish healthcare companies to share and discuss with everyone.
Overview of Healthcare Companies in Spain
According to the latest business directory data, there are over 41,000 companies in Spain engaged in health-related activities. While this number might sound large, it actually accounts for only 1.2% of the total number of businesses in the country. Although the percentage is small, the absolute number is quite significant given the vast total number of enterprises in Spain.
These companies cover everything from hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies to medical device manufacturing and health tech R&D, forming a complete industry chain. Interestingly, the majority are small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), or even privately-owned clinics, with large medical groups being in the minority.
Regional Distribution of Companies
When it comes to business distribution, the regional differences are quite noticeable. I’ve created a simple table for a clearer overview:
| Region | Number of Healthcare Companies | % of Total Companies in Region |
| Catalonia | Approx. 7,000 | 1.1% |
| Madrid | Approx. 6,700 | 1.2% |
| Andalusia | Approx. 6,300 | 1.2% |
| Valencian Community | Approx. 4,800 | 1.3% |
As the table shows, Catalonia, Madrid, and Andalusia are the three regions with the highest concentration of healthcare companies, which aligns with their status as major economic and population centers in Spain. Notably, while the Valencian Community doesn’t have the highest total number of companies, its healthcare sector makes up the largest proportion of its local economy at 1.3%, indicating a very active healthcare industry in the region.

Spain’s healthcare system is supported by a vast and diverse network of companies. Although the majority are concentrated in a few main regions, the industry has permeated every corner of the country. The convenience of seeing a doctor or buying medicine is largely thanks to the existence of these businesses, a topic you can learn more about by checking Spanish healthcare information.
