When I first came to Spain, I used to call to book appointments with my family doctor. But sometimes the operator spoke too fast, or the line was busy, which wasn’t a great experience. Then, a friend showed me the [Spanish healthcare website], and I discovered that doing it directly on the healthcare system’s official site is incredibly convenient! You can not only book a Cita but also check your medical records and view lab results. Today, I’m sharing the full process of logging into the website for those who are not yet familiar with it.

Preparations Before Logging In: Your “Digital Key”
To access Spanish government websites, including the healthcare system, you need a secure ‘digital identity’ to verify who you are. This isn’t as simple as just registering a username and password. There are generally three main methods, and you’ll need at least one of them:
- Certificado Digital (Digital Certificate): This is like your online ID card and needs to be installed on your computer or phone beforehand. The application process is a bit tedious, but once it’s set up, it’s the most convenient to use.
- Cl@ve PIN: A temporary verification code system. When you log in, the system provides a short-lived PIN for you to enter. It’s suitable for users who don’t log in frequently.
- Cl@ve Permanente (Permanent Cl@ve): This involves setting up a permanent username and password, supplemented by an SMS verification code for login. It’s secure and also quite convenient.
Step 1: Open your browser and go to the Spanish Social Security office’s official website: sede.seg-social.gob.es. Once there, find the citizen’s portal, “Ciudadanos”.
Step 2: In the citizens’ services menu, find the “Asistencia Sanitaria” (Healthcare) option. Click on it, and you’ll see all the online services related to medical care.
Step 3: Select the service you need, such as the most common one, “Cita previa de atención primaria y especializada” (Primary and specialized care appointment). The system will direct you to an identity verification page. Here, you can choose one of the methods mentioned above, like the Certificado Digital or a Cl@ve option, to log in. Follow the prompts, such as selecting your digital certificate or entering your Cl@ve PIN, to successfully access your personal account.
| Login Method | Pros | Cons |
| Certificado Digital | One-time setup, works for most government websites | Initial application and installation are complex |
| Cl@ve PIN | No installation required, high security | A new PIN is needed for every login |
| Cl@ve Permanente | Easy-to-remember username/password, more convenient than PIN | Requires SMS verification, registration is more complex than for PIN |
Once you’ve logged in, booking a Cita, choosing a doctor, and selecting a time are all done through a very intuitive graphical interface. I hope this guide helps everyone! No more stressing out over calling to book a doctor’s appointment
