I’ve only been in Spain for a short while, and beyond the sun, beaches, and food, I’ve become quite interested in its industrial manufacturing. I used to think that when it came to European engineering, Germany and Switzerland were the undisputed leaders. However, after chatting with some friends, I’ve discovered that Spain is a hidden powerhouse in the fields of medical devices and high-end machine tools!
It seems like most discussions on lifestyle forums here focus on leisure and culture. So today, I’d like to get the ball rolling and open a thread to delve into Spain’s ‘hardcore’ industries. I’m wondering if anyone here works in these sectors or is knowledgeable about them. When it comes to Spanish medical devices and machine tools, which companies are the best?
Giants in the Medical Device Sector
When talking about medical devices, the first name that comes to mind is Grifols. This company is a world-class player in plasma-derived products and diagnostic equipment. Their devices can be found in hospitals in many countries, making them a true source of Spanish pride. Then there’s Indra; although its main focus is on information technology and defense, its medical IT and simulation diagnostics divisions are also thriving. There are also companies focused on specific niches, like those producing radiotherapy equipment. While they might not be as famous as some [Spanish medical device and machine tool companies], their technical capabilities are not to be underestimated.

The “Basque Lions” of the Machine Tool Industry
The machine tool sector is even more interesting! A large portion of the world-renowned ‘Spanish machine tools’ actually come from the Basque Country. There are a few brands here that are household names in the industry. I’ve done some research and would appreciate it if those in the know could check my findings. I’ve summarized them in a simple table:
| Company | Notable Brands | Main Fields |
| Danobatgroup | Danobat, Soraluce | Grinding, turning, milling, heavy-duty machines |
| Mondragon | Fagor, ONA | CNC systems, automation, EDM machines |
| Nicolás Correa | Nicolás Correa | Large gantry milling machines |
Soraluce, under the Danobatgroup, is particularly noteworthy. Their milling and boring machines are famous worldwide and are indispensable for machining many precision components. And then there’s Fagor's CNC systems; while their market share might not match Siemens or Fanuc, they are a significant force in Europe. It really feels like the Basque Country is the ‘industrial heart’ of Spain.
This is just my basic understanding as a layman of some [Spanish machine tool brands]. I’m sure there are many other excellent local Spanish brands I’m not aware of. Besides these, what other medical device or machine tool companies do you think are worth watching, especially considering [Spanish medical device exports]? Has anyone here used their products? What was the experience like? Please feel free to add your thoughts and join the discussion, so we can all get a deeper understanding of the country we live in!
