Preparation: A Digital ID is Key
Before you start, the most crucial step is to have a digital identity certificate recognized by the Spanish government. This is the ‘key’ to accessing almost all online government services. The main options are:
- Certificado Digital: I highly recommend getting this one first; it’s a one-and-done solution. The application process is a bit tedious, but once you have it, you can use it for all sorts of government websites, including tax, social security, and traffic authorities.
- Cl@ve PIN / Cl@ve Permanente: This is also very useful, especially the Cl@ve PIN, which allows you to log in securely and conveniently by receiving a dynamic code on your mobile app.
With a digital ID, you can log in to the healthcare service websites of the various autonomous communities. Below, I’ve compiled the official website addresses for some major regions and the basic documents required for your reference.

Each region’s website and specific requirements may vary slightly, but they are generally similar. The core idea is to prove your legal identity, residency, and social security eligibility. I’ll list the details for Madrid and Catalonia as examples. If you’re in another region, you can check your local healthcare authority’s website for information on Spanish health insurance.

Once you go through the whole process, you’ll find it’s much simpler than you might think.
