Shortly after arriving in Spain, the biggest fear is getting sick. Although we know the Spanish healthcare system is good, choosing a hospital can still be a bit confusing. Besides the distinction between public and private, are there any other references? I recently chatted with a friend who works in a hospital and learned about a very impressive standard: JCI accreditation.
What is JCI Accreditation?
JCI is an American non-profit organization that accredits healthcare organizations worldwide. You can think of it as the ‘Michelin star rating’ of the medical world. Obtaining this accreditation means a hospital has reached top international standards in patient safety, medical quality, and management. The audit is extremely rigorous, and it’s said that reassessment is required every three years, making it highly valuable.

What’s the difference between a JCI-accredited hospital and a regular one?
The biggest difference is standardization and attention to detail. In a hospital that has passed JCI accreditation, the entire process from your admission to discharge follows a strict set of protocols, which is a hallmark of the quality within the Spanish healthcare system. For example, regarding medication safety, patient information is repeatedly verified to prevent errors. For infection control, the hospital’s cleaning and disinfection standards are exceptionally high. My friend mentioned that in JCI-accredited hospitals, even the duration and steps for doctors to wash their hands are clearly defined, showcasing a level of care you can learn more about when you delve into the Spanish healthcare system. So, choosing such a hospital adds an extra layer of security.
This doesn’t mean that hospitals without this accreditation are bad. Many excellent public hospitals in Spain may not have specifically applied for this certification due to their different system, but their medical standards are equally high. JCI is more of a ‘bonus point’ for private Spanish hospitals to prove they meet international standards and to attract international patients. For ordinary people like us, if you have private health insurance, JCI accreditation is undoubtedly a very valuable reference when choosing a designated hospital.
Here are some well-known Spanish hospitals that have received JCI accreditation for your reference:
| Hospital Name | City |
| Hospital Quirónsalud Barcelona | Barcelona |
| Hospital Universitario Quirónsalud Madrid | Madrid |
| Clínica Universidad de Navarra | Pamplona/Madrid |
| Centro Médico Teknon | Barcelona |
| Hospital Ruber Internacional | Madrid |
