When I first arrived in Spain, I was completely baffled by the healthcare system, especially the legendary ‘free healthcare.’ After a few years, I’ve gone from running around everywhere with my health card asking questions to being able to handle most things online. It feels like Spain’s healthcare digitalization is quietly making progress. Today, I’m going to talk about my personal experience, especially with that thing called SaludInforma.
My Digital Healthcare Journey: From App to Pharmacy
Initially, my family doctor would give me a small slip of paper with the date of my next appointment. Later, he told me I could book it myself online or through an app. I decided to give it a try and downloaded the healthcare app for my autonomous community. After entering my CIP/CIPA (health identification code) and some personal information, a whole new world opened up.

SaludInforma: One Portal, Multiple Functions
This platform basically integrates all the essential healthcare services you need. My most used feature is booking appointments with my family doctor. You can directly select a time on the calendar, which is much more convenient than calling—no more worrying about my Spanish listening skills not being good enough or not getting through. Besides appointments, I also use it to:
- View lab results: The results of blood and urine tests are available online, so there’s no need to go back to the hospital to pick them up. It’s very convenient.
- Check my e-prescriptions: This is the feature I find most impressive! The medication prescribed by the doctor is directly synchronized with my health card. I can go to any pharmacy, swipe my card, and the pharmacist knows exactly what medicine I need and in what quantity. It’s a lifesaver for people who need long-term medication. No more worrying about losing paper prescriptions.
- Look up vaccination records: My COVID-19 vaccination records are all in there, clear at a glance.
It’s not perfect, though. Sometimes the system can be a bit laggy or not updated in time. Moreover, when it comes to [Spanish medical information], booking appointments with specialists usually still requires a referral from a family doctor and is then arranged by the hospital; you can’t just book them yourself on the app.
E-Prescriptions and Pharmacy Experience
Speaking of e-prescriptions, they really deserve high praise. I used to go to the pharmacy with several paper prescriptions, which the pharmacist had to check one by one, and it was easy for me to get them mixed up. Now, it’s just one health card with all the information in the system. The system records the time and quantity of each medication pickup, preventing you from getting it too early or in excess. However, it’s worth noting that for some medications, you need to pick them up at scheduled intervals, even if the prescription is still valid. For example, you might need to pick up a supply monthly and can’t collect a three-month quantity at once. This is also linked to keeping your records current, like when you need to update your health card information.
Here’s a simple pros and cons comparison I’ve put together, based on my personal feelings:
| Feature | Pros | Cons |
| Online Booking | Flexible scheduling, avoids language barriers on the phone | Cannot book specialist appointments directly |
| E-Prescription | Convenient, fast, and hard to lose | Occasional system delays, time restrictions on pickup |
| Viewing Results | Saves time, results are clear | Complex reports still require a doctor’s interpretation |
| Inter-regional Use | Nationwide pharmacy network, convenient for travel | Apps are not universal across different autonomous communities |
While Spain’s digital healthcare may not be as advanced as in some other countries, it is highly practical and is steadily becoming more user-friendly. For those of us living abroad, understanding and using these digital tools can save a lot of trouble, especially when dealing with things like [health card information changes]. Feel free to share your own experiences using the system in different autonomous communities in the comments below!
