For those new to Spain, one of the most daunting tasks can be navigating the healthcare system. You’re in a new place, your Spanish might not be fluent yet, and if you get sick, how do you know which hospital is reliable? Or which doctor has good reviews? Today, I’m sharing a few search methods I always use, hoping to help you all out!

Public vs. Private System: Search Strategies
First, it’s important to understand that Spain’s healthcare system is divided into public and private sectors. With the public system, you generally don’t get to choose; you’re assigned to a local health center (centro de salud) and a specific regional hospital based on your registered address. In this case, your research will mostly focus on the hospital’s overall quality, such as its equipment and specialized departments. Private health insurance, however, is a different story. It allows you to freely choose any hospital or doctor within your insurance provider’s network, making it crucial to research a doctor’s reputation and credentials beforehand.
Some Useful Websites for Your Search
The following websites, some for public and some for private healthcare, each have their own focus. It’s a good idea to bookmark them:
- Doctoralia.es: This is probably the website I use the most, mainly for finding private doctors. It has tons of real user reviews, and you can see a doctor’s professional background, specialties, clinic address, and even book appointments online. For those looking for a specialist within the Spanish healthcare system, this site is a lifesaver.
- Top Doctors: This site is more high-end, featuring what they call “top doctors” who have been vetted by them. While it might feel a bit like an
advertisement, the doctors listed do have very impressive credentials. If you have high standards for medical quality, it can be a valuable reference.
- MSCBS: The official website of the Spanish Ministry of Health (Ministerio de Sanidad, Consumo y Bienestar Social - MSCBS) provides highly authoritative information. You can find official data on all registered medical institutions. Although there are no user reviews, you can find basic information like the hospital’s type (public/private), number of beds, and the specialized Spanish medical services offered, making it very reliable for verifying information.
Here’s a table summarizing the features of each platform:
| Platform | Main Function | Pros | Cons |
| Doctoralia | Find private doctors, read reviews, book online | Many user reviews, large amount of information | Information requires your own judgment |
| Top Doctors | Showcases vetted top specialists | Excellent credentials, high level of professionalism | Limited selection of doctors |
| Ministry of Health Website | Look up official information on registered medical institutions | Authoritative and accurate information | No user reviews, basic information |
For common minor illnesses, going directly to your local health center is usually fine. However, if you need to see a specialist or want to find a reliable private doctor, I highly recommend first searching on Doctoralia to see what others say in their reviews of Spanish healthcare before making a decision. I hope this information is helpful to you! Feel free to share any other useful methods you know!
