I moved to Spain a little while ago and am still not very familiar with the healthcare system here. When I had minor ailments like a headache or a slight fever, I had no idea what medicine to buy at the pharmacy. Staring at shelves full of drug names in Spanish was completely overwhelming.
Recently, I spent some time doing my homework and asked some local friends, compiling a list of essentials for a Spanish home medicine cabinet. These are all over-the-counter (OTC) drugs that you can buy directly at a pharmacy for common minor issues. I’m posting it here for reference, especially for those who have just arrived, hoping to save you some trouble. Experienced folks are also welcome to add to or correct the list!
Common Ailments and Recommended Medicines
Colds and Fevers
When it comes to cold medicine, Frenadol is an absolute household name in Spain, a staple in almost every home. It’s a combination cold medicine effective for relieving multiple symptoms like headache, fever, runny nose, and muscle aches. Another common choice is Gelocatil, whose main ingredient is paracetamol. It’s great for reducing fever and relieving pain, and it’s gentler on the stomach than Ibuprofeno.
Pain Relief and Anti-inflammatory
Ibuprofeno is practically a universal painkiller, tackling everything from headaches, toothaches, and period pain to joint pain. A common brand is Nurofen, but pharmacy-branded versions are much cheaper and contain the exact same ingredients. It’s worth noting that Ibuprofeno can irritate the stomach, so it’s best taken after a meal.

Stomach and Digestive Issues
Almax is a star product for treating excess stomach acid and heartburn, and it works very quickly. If you’re dealing with diarrhea, you can find options in Spanish pharmacies like Fortasec, which stops it fast, but be careful not to overuse it. For indigestion and bloating, consider Iberogast; it’s one of those herbal Spanish medical products in drop form and is relatively gentle. Lastly, probiotics are a must-have for any home, helping to regulate gut flora, especially after taking antibiotics.
| Type of Medicine | Recommended Brand/Ingredient | Main Effects |
| Comprehensive Cold Relief | Frenadol Complex | Relieves multiple cold symptoms |
| Fever & Pain Relief | Paracetamol | Reduces fever, relieves mild to moderate pain |
| Anti-inflammatory & Pain Relief | Ibuprofeno | Anti-inflammatory, relieves various types of pain |
| Excess Stomach Acid | Almax | Quickly neutralizes stomach acid, relieves heartburn |
Finally, a friendly reminder: although these are all over-the-counter drugs, it’s best to consult a pharmacist before use and read the instructions carefully. And while you can discover many innovative health gadgets at a Spanish medical fair, if your symptoms persist or worsen, you must see a doctor promptly
! Wishing everyone good health, so you’ll never need these medicines! Haha!
