When I first moved to Spain, I always felt the pace of life was quite relaxed. Beyond tourism and food, it seemed the tech industry, including Spanish medical technology, didn’t have much of a presence. However, after recently navigating the healthcare system for a family member, I realized I was completely living in a bubble! Spain’s prowess in medical technology is far greater than I ever imagined.
A bit of research revealed several companies that are global “hidden champions.” Unlike household names like Zara’s parent company, Inditex, or Amadeus, these MedTech companies are very low-key but incredibly powerful. For instance, Barcelona-based Grifols, which specializes in blood-plasma products, is a major global player with a staggering market capitalization. Then there’s Werfen, also from Barcelona, which focuses on in-vitro diagnostics; you can find their equipment in the laboratory departments of many hospitals.

I’ve put together a simple table listing a few companies that caught my eye, along with some basic information, to give everyone a quick overview of Spanish medical technology. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg, and I’m sure there are many other impressive companies I’m not aware of.
| Company Name | Headquarters | Main Business | Personal Impression |
| Grifols | Barcelona | Plasma-derived medicines, transfusion diagnostics | An industry giant, a true global player |
| Werfen | Barcelona | In-vitro diagnostics, medical equipment | The “unsung hero” in hospitals |
| PharmaMar | Madrid | Antitumor drug R&D | An innovative pioneer in the biotech field |
| Teladoc Health | Global | Telemedicine services | A super-hot digital health stock post-pandemic |
Besides these major players in [Spanish medical technology], Spain is also home to many dynamic small and medium-sized MedTech startups. Significant industry clusters have formed, especially in Barcelona, Madrid, and the Basque Country. They are developing a wide range of innovations, from surgical robots and AI-assisted diagnostic software to various wearable health devices, showing immense future potential. Have any of you used products or services from these companies in your daily lives? Or does anyone have friends working at these firms who could share some inside experiences? Let’s discuss!
