Lately, watching the news, it seems like hospital emergency rooms are once again facing long queues, putting immense pressure on healthcare workers. It’s heartbreaking to see how exhausted they are, and it makes me wonder: beyond taking our own precautions to avoid burdening the Spanish healthcare system, what else can we, as ordinary citizens, do to actively support them?
After doing some research and asking local friends, I’ve found there are actually quite a few channels through which we can contribute to Spain’s healthcare system. It doesn’t have to be a large sum of money; sometimes, small gestures can bring a lot of warmth. I’ve compiled some of the methods I found to get the ball rolling, and I hope anyone who knows of other ways will share them.
Official or Large-Scale Donation Channels
If you want to provide support through more formal and reliable channels, major non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are the top choice. Their operations are well-regulated, and the use of donations is generally transparent. These organizations not only provide aid within Spain but many of their projects are also global in scope.

I’ve mainly looked into the following two, which most people are probably familiar with:
- Cruz Roja Española: This is one of Spain’s largest comprehensive humanitarian aid organizations. They not only respond during emergencies but also provide ongoing medical support, social assistance, and other services to vulnerable groups, including supporting medical teams. You can find the donation portal directly on their official website, with options for one-time donations or becoming a monthly member.
- Médicos Sin Fronteras (Doctors Without Borders): This is an international medical humanitarian aid organization with an office in Spain. Their work focuses more on providing emergency medical assistance in areas affected by conflict, epidemics, and natural disasters. While not exclusively focused on Spanish domestic hospitals, supporting them is a contribution to global health and medical efforts.
Niche but Equally Important Ways to Help
Besides donating to large organizations, there are many ways to offer more ‘targeted’ support. For instance, some hospitals establish their own foundations to accept public donations for equipment upgrades, medical research, or improving staff working conditions. This is a great way to directly impact the experience of seeking medical care in Spain at a local level. You can check the official websites of major hospitals in your city or region; this information is usually found in the footer or under a ‘Colabora’ (Collaborate) section.
There are also heartwarming small gestures. During the height of the pandemic, I saw community groups spontaneously organize to deliver coffee, snacks, or thank-you cards to nearby hospitals. Although the situation is not as critical now, I believe this kind of moral support is a huge comfort to anyone working under intense pressure. You could also ask in your community groups to see if there are any similar neighborhood initiatives you can join.
I’ve put together a simple table to compare the features of different support methods, to help you choose.
| Support Method | Pros | Cons | Best Suited For |
| Donating to large NGOs | High transparency, broad impact | Funds may not go directly to local hospitals | People who prefer established procedures and want to support wider-ranging projects |
| Donating to hospital foundations | Highly targeted, directly supports a specific hospital | Requires personal research; channels are less convenient than major NGOs | People who want to contribute directly to their local community’s healthcare system |
| Community material/moral support | High engagement, a direct expression of goodwill | Can be difficult to organize; not all hospitals may accept it | Enthusiastic community members with available time and energy |
| Becoming a volunteer | Deep involvement, contributing time and skills | Often has language and professional skill requirements | Those with ample time, proficient language skills, and relevant abilities |
At the end of the day, no matter the method, the thought itself is what’s most valuable. Does anyone know of other ways to offer support? Please feel free to leave a comment and discuss below!
