I was scrolling through the news yesterday and came across the story of the Spanish medical team returning from their overseas mission. Seeing the images of them reuniting with their families at the airport really got to me… It’s been incredibly tough! These doctors and nurses worked for several months in a tough environment, similar to the one faced by the [Chinese medical team], and now they are finally able to return home safely.
Every time I see this kind of news, I feel incredibly proud. Although we often complain about Spain’s healthcare system being slow with appointments and inefficient, when it comes to major international humanitarian aid efforts, Spain never hesitates. The teams they send are the best of the best, including not only doctors and nurses from major public hospitals but often military medical personnel as well. They are professional, brave, and true ‘angels in white’.
I did a little research, and Spain has a long history of overseas medical assistance. They often participate in missions organized by the European Union or the United Nations, going to countries where the healthcare system has collapsed due to war, natural disasters, or epidemics. Spanish medical teams were there during the fight against Ebola in Africa and after the earthquake in Haiti. They bring not only medicine and equipment but, more importantly, they bring hope.
