When I first arrived in Spain, the biggest headache was dealing with all the different cards and documents, especially that blue health card. You don’t use it often, but when you do need it, you end up turning the house upside down. And if you lose it, getting a replacement is an even bigger hassle.
Recently, I discovered a fantastic app that lets you view your virtual health card and all related medical information directly on your phone. It’s incredibly convenient! I’m sharing it today—I’ve tested it myself and it works perfectly. I hope it helps others in need.
What is this app called?
The name of the app might differ depending on the autonomous community, but the features are largely the same. In the Community of Madrid, where I live, the app is called “Tarjeta Sanitaria Virtual”. You can search for it in your app store based on your region’s name. For example, in Andalusia, it might be “Salud Andalucía,” and in Catalonia, “La Meva Salut.” Generally, searching for “Tarjeta Sanitaria” plus the name of your community will do the trick.

How to register and use it?
The registration process isn’t complicated, but it does require a bit of patience. I’ve broken down the main steps for your reference:
| Step | Description |
| Step 1 | Download and install the app from your phone’s app store. |
| Step 2 | Open the app and select ‘Register.’ You will need to enter your health card number, NIE number, and date of birth. |
| Step 3 | The system will send a verification code to the mobile number you previously registered with the social security system. |
| Step 4 | Enter the verification code, then set a PIN or enable fingerprint/face ID login. |
| Step 5 | All set! After logging in, you’ll be able to see your virtual health card, personal details, assigned family doctor, past medical history, and future appointments. |
This app has been a real lifesaver. Now, even if I forget my physical card, I’m covered as long as I have my phone. You can also view lab results, see your prescriptions, and even request or cancel appointments (citas) online. For expats, having all this information in one place is incredibly user-friendly, similar to other helpful tools like the Sanitas App. No more worrying about language barriers and struggling to communicate at the reception desk. I highly recommend everyone give it a try!
