In-Person Activation Process
I went to the Centro de Salud in my district and headed straight to the reception desk. I explained my situation to the staff, saying “mi tarjeta sanitaria ha caducado y necesito renovarla” (my health card has expired and I need to renew it). The staff member was very efficient and asked for my residence card and the old, expired health card.
They checked my personal information, mainly to see if my registered address had changed. Since my address was the same, the process was quite simple. If you’ve moved, remember to bring your latest residence certificate (certificado de empadronamiento)—this is very important! After updating my details in their system, they told me the new card would be sent to my home by regular mail and should arrive in one to two weeks.
