Having lived in Spain for a while now, one of my favorite topics to discuss with friends is which villa area is the most comfortable to live in. The official rankings online feel too commercial, so today I’m going to be bold and post an unofficial personal ranking of Spanish villa areas, based purely on my own feelings and feedback from friends. If I had to make a ranking for the quintessential [Spanish Impression Villa], the top spot would have to be the Costa del Sol. It’s the most famous and best fits the popular image of a “Spanish villa.” The Marbella area, in particular, is a playground for the rich. The pros are that it has everything you could want: sun, beaches, and golf courses, and it’s highly international, making life incredibly convenient. But the cons are also obvious: it’s overcrowded in the summer, and the prices for goods and real estate are sky-high, so it lacks a bit of that tranquil, authentic Spanish feel.
Next, I’d place the Balearic Islands and the Costa Blanca in the second tier. Ibiza and Mallorca boast unbeatable sea views and a unique island vibe, making them more suitable for those seeking a holiday feel and privacy—though the prices are, of course, just as steep. The Costa Blanca, around places like Alicante and Jávea, feels like a more “budget-friendly” version of the Costa del Sol. It offers better value for money, and the community atmosphere is more geared towards families and retirees, with a slower pace of life. A friend of mine calls it the second home for the British, haha.
I want to give a special mention to a personal favorite of mine: “Green Spain”. This includes the northern regions like Galicia or Asturias. The landscape here is completely different from the south—more like the English countryside, with green hills and rugged coastlines everywhere. Although it’s rainier, the summers are cool, and the cost of living is much more reasonable. The lifestyle here is more traditional and authentic, offering a true taste of Spain and different Spanish villa prices. It’s perfect for those who truly want to get away from it all and experience pure nature in a setting reminiscent of a classic [Changji Spanish villa].
