Hey everyone! I’ve seen a lot of questions on the forums lately about choosing a university, and it seems many of you aren’t familiar with the university landscape in Spain. I’ve been in Spain for a few years now, so I thought I’d put together a list of Spanish universities. This is just my personal take, and I hope it helps future students
!
A Guide to Spain’s Main University Regions
The Community of Madrid
First up has to be the capital, Madrid! It’s not just the heart of Spain but also a major hub for higher education. Among the public universities, the Complutense University of Madrid is the oldest and largest. For students in STEM fields, the Polytechnic University of Madrid is a key institution to consider. If you’re into business or social sciences, the Charles III University of Madrid is an absolute top choice. Additionally, the Autonomous University of Madrid boasts strong overall academic prowess.
Catalonia
After Madrid, we have to talk about Catalonia, home to Barcelona. The academic atmosphere here is just as vibrant. The University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona are two world-renowned comprehensive universities that consistently top various ranking lists. For those aspiring to study economics and business, Pompeu Fabra University is a dream school for many. Meanwhile, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia is a cradle for engineers.

Other Regions & Ranking Reference
Beyond these two major regions, excellent public universities can also be found in Andalusia, such as the University of Seville and the University of Granada, as well as the University of Valencia in the Valencian Community. To give you a clearer picture, I’ve put together a simple ranking table. You can also explore options in other areas, like the universities in Spain’s Basque Country
.

| University of Barcelona | 164 | Catalonia |
| Complutense University of Madrid | 171 | Madrid |
