After settling down in Spain, one of the first things I wanted to do was get a comprehensive medical check-up. After all, it’s crucial to know your health status when living abroad. Initially, I was a bit lost, unsure whether to go through the public healthcare system or a private clinic. After some research and personal experience, I’m here to share what I’ve learned.
Public vs. Private: How to Choose for a Medical Check-up?
To put it simply, if you’re covered by social security, you can visit your family doctor (médico de cabecera) in the public system to get referrals for basic tests like blood and urine analysis. However, these are usually for specific symptoms. If you want a thorough, top-to-bottom screening, the public system can be slow, and your doctor might not deem extensive tests necessary. Private hospitals or dedicated Spanish medical check-up centers are a different story. They offer various packaged check-up plans, from basic screenings to in-depth cancer screenings. You just pay for the service, and it’s efficient with better customer service, making it ideal for those who want a hassle-free experience or have specific testing needs.

A Few Private Medical Centers I Researched
My research was mainly focused on Madrid and Barcelona, but residents of other cities can also look into these chains. These centers usually have their own websites where you can book appointments online or inquire by phone, which is very convenient.
- HM Hospitales: This is a large hospital group with locations in major cities across Spain. Their check-up services are called “Chequeos” and are categorized by gender, age group, and specific needs, such as cardiac or sports-focused packages. The facilities are modern and the service is professional, though the prices are relatively higher.
- Creu Blanca: Located primarily in Barcelona, this clinic is very well-known. They offer a wide range of check-up packages, from basic to comprehensive ones that include CT scans and MRIs. Their website is very detailed and transparent with pricing, allowing you to see exactly what each package includes.
- D-Médical: This clinic is in Madrid, and it’s the one I ultimately chose. They specialize in preventive medicine and comprehensive diagnostics. The environment is pleasant, not as cold and clinical as a traditional hospital. I opted for a mid-range package, and the entire process took about half a day. A nurse guided me through everything, making for a positive experience, and the final report was explained in great detail.
Below is a simple table I made when comparing a few basic packages. Prices are approximate; please check the official websites for accurate details.
| Package | Basic Blood/Urine Test | ECG | Chest X-ray | Abdominal Ultrasound | Doctor Consultation |
| Package A | ✔️ | ✔️ | ✔️ | ❌ | ✔️ |

Getting regular check-ups is a way of taking responsibility for your health. Although it costs some money, the peace of mind it brings, or the potential for early detection of health issues, makes it absolutely worthwhile in my opinion. If you have any other good medical centers to recommend, please share them in the comments to help others out! One more tip: if you have private health insurance, many check-up services may be covered. Remember to check with your insurance provider before booking your appointment.
