What is the Spanish Health Card?
Simply put, the Spanish health card is your proof of eligibility for Spain’s public healthcare services. The card displays your personal information and a unique personal identification code. With this card, the healthcare system can identify you and keep a record of your entire medical history and health file. You’ll need it whether you’re visiting a local health center (centro de salud) or a public hospital.
Main Uses of the Health Card
This card is incredibly useful, for much more than just seeing a doctor:
Booking a Family Doctor
In Spain, the first step to getting medical care is usually booking an appointment with your family doctor (médico de cabecera). Once you have your health card, you’ll be assigned to a specific local health center and a family doctor. For any common ailments like a cold, fever, or stomach flu, you can use your health card details to book an appointment by phone or through the healthcare system’s app. The doctor will provide an initial diagnosis and treatment, and if necessary, refer you to a specialist.
Going to the Emergency Room
In an emergency, like a sudden high fever in the middle of the night or an accidental injury, you can go directly to the emergency department (urgencias) of a public hospital. When you arrive, the reception desk will ask for your health card to register you. Even though it’s an emergency, having the card proves you’re entitled to use the public healthcare system, which makes the process much smoother. Of course, in a life-threatening situation, the hospital will treat you first even without a card, but you’ll inevitably have to submit the paperwork later, which can be a hassle.
Prescriptions and Reimbursements
This is my favorite feature! When you take a prescription from your doctor to the pharmacy, you can get a significant discount by presenting your health card. The reimbursement rate varies depending on your personal circumstances, but you generally only pay a small fraction of the cost. For example, a box of medicine that originally costs €20 might only cost you a few euros. But be aware, over-the-counter medications are not covered!
